York Regiment
« on: Sunday 30 January 11 23:37 GMT (UK) »
Can someone help with the following.

This is a sentence from a copy of a letter given to me in my research.

'letters to Hugh, a tailor, from his brother John serving with the York  Regiment in British North America'.

Hugh was Hugh Logue born c1808 and said to be from Ireland who married Anna Maria Wickham in 1830 in London and they went to Connecticut. The above sentence is the only mention of anyone in Hughs family and I would like to find out what war it was, about the York Regiment and why British North America.
Regards,

LinnettW

For the time frame mentioned, British North America would refer to Canada, rather than the United States.  Would suggest looking in Canada for York (or York's) regiment, and your person.

Thank you nickgc. I wouldn't have thought of Canada and will search there.

me again

just had a look about for the york reg according to wickipedia the york reg spent most of the 19th c on garrison duty both in britain and the  british empire and the 1st bat was shipped out to new brunswick in 1862 at the time of the trent affair when eng and usa came close to war , so if that letter is in that time frame there is your probable answer

My thanks to you t mo for your information which I will follow up.  Unfortunately that sentence I quoted is all that was mentioned in the letter written to my relative in 1984.  After the American connection died they hopefully were passed on to someone who has kept them safe.
Again my thanks

Regards,
Lynette
