john s Donovan

Can someone please have a look at the 1851 Census at Joseph Bartrum Azelby Donovan and son John See Donovan...John S Donovan was my Great grandfather, and on his death certificate was John Sewell Donovan...I am trying to see if the "S" on the census could be the start of the word W, as in   "Sewell" not See...could this be an error....Dale.

John does not appear in the 1851 census that I can see, but does appear in 1861.

Father as Joseph B A.

Clearly written as John S, son 9, Scholar, born Croydon, Surrey.

There is a John Wells DONOVAN born about the same time, but his father is Michael.

It looks like Jno Se to me.

Wendz, you are not supposed to post the full image, but you can post part of it. The Mods will probably take it down fairly quickly.

Dear all...thanks for your assistance..don't worry Wendy..I know the feeling.

John S Donovan...when I looked at the 1851 census I think whoever wrote it ran out of room on the paper, and began to write Sewell. then changed to Se??  it doesn't look like another E...could it be the beginning of the word Sewell...  My greatgrandfather was known as John Henry..then on a birth record he was down as John Sewell Henry  )NZ BDM)  and his death certificate was John Sewell Donovan..born Croydon Surrey 1851..  Dale

Merlin....I feel I have this thread somewhere else, but cant find..can it be put here, or do I leave it as such.......
To explain my dilema...John Donovan..born 1851 Croydon Surrey...had a couple of names...
He ended up in NZ abt.1874...married Alice Herbert Hankins..1877 Christchurch NZ...On his marriage certificate, which I have..he is down as John Henry Donovan..Marinor....On his childrens birth records, he is down as John Henry..also John Sewell Henry...and on his death certificate he is down as John Sewell Donovan..died 1914..age 63...
I have looked on Ancestry Censuses, and found a John S Donovan..born 1851 Croydon Surrey, son of Joseph BA Donovan....and since, have been contacted by a relative in NZ who stated that his father was a Rev.Joseph Donovan...On the 1851 census he is down as John See Donovan..2 months old... I was asking for help with the writing on that sensus, as I felt it was a start to a W instead of E....as you will read on the above threads.
My difficulty is, getting proof of his family, as in BDM..but as this could be rather expensive without some fact..I have hit that brick wall.....any help would be greatly appreciated.....Dale.

Thanks Merlin...will have a re-think on that... I have from a relative in NZ..that John Donovan 's father was a Rev.Joseph Donovan...and the only Rev. Joseph Donovan I can find is the one born at Bermondsey...1832... have to get back to you tomorrow....Dale.

Hi Ian C

Ooooooops  :o sorry! I didn't realise, I will use my snipping tool next time!  I only joined a few days ago and am still learning the protocol!  I did start reading the do's and don'ts but didn't quite finish them!!  ::)

Yes it does state 'Jno Se' on the transcribed census, I have found many names shortened to fit into the small census boxes.   At least Dale has had time to take a copy.....I will learn from my mistakes!  ;)

Wendy

ps just had a bash and managed to just save the section req! hooray!
