Strood Road Name
« on: Monday 31 January 11 19:29 GMT (UK) »
I have a baptism record that shows the abode as being Cobham Road Strood.
The family have always mentioned it to be Cuxton Road Strood.
As far as I am aware there is no such road as Cobham Road Strood.
Is it common to have mistakes within Baptism Records and this one is from the late 1920's ?
Or is there such a road as Cobham Road ?

If you type Cobham Road into the Medway Cityark search engine, one of the results shows an area around Watling Street being described as Cobham Road http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/

Similarly typing "Cobham Road" Strood into google throws up a couple of results too ............ Elm Terrace in Cobham Road 1928, The "Three Crutches Inn" on Cobham Road.

Hi cooperman.
Yes I am sure Cobham Road is where the The Three Crutches pub is.Its along time ago but I lived there as a child and sure my address was Cobham Road! Then I think it became Old Watling Street after the M2 was opened c 1959.
Would love to know the family you are looking for as I am looking into the history of that area.

Hi Jean,

Many thanks for your input and I do think that you are right here.

The family that I am looking for is the Wood family and consists of Herbert Arthur and his wife Gertrude nee Smoker and they lived at number 6 according to their sons baptism record (Dec 1920)and he was called Robert Arthur.
Robert became a pilot in the RAF during the war.

Herbert and Gertrude moved to Cuxton Road in the late twenty's

Incidentally I do believe that the Three Crutches pub is now closed.

Hi cooperman.
Are you sure The Three Crutches pub is closed.I think my dad would have told me,I phone him every week and he still lives in the area.
I knew two Wood families when I lived in Cobham Road both lived in Crutches lane which linked Cobham Road to Higham. One family worked on Crutches and Chaper Farm and the other owned Rede Court garage. But I am talking 1950-1960's!!

           Regards Jean.

Hi Jean,

Thanks for the reply and yes you could be right about the pub I only thought it was closed but the web site gives every indication that it is still open.
