Widley/Pudsey/Audley/Tudeley - Kent Place Names
« on: Monday 31 January 11 20:26 GMT (UK) »
Does anybody recognise any of these place names in Kent - apart from Tudeley near Capel whose records I have searched already.

An ancestor Charles Bishop variously gives these as his birthplace on the census returns but always states Kent.

He was a chairbottomer - are any of these places known for chair bottoming?

He was born about 1811 but the earliest record I can find of him is in the marriage register of St. Nicolas, Brighton in 1836.

Any local knowledge appreciated please.

There is a pretty comprehensive list of Kent place names http://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/Research/Libr/KPN/A/01/01.htm

Have you checked the actual images of the various census returns to eliminate mistranscriptions?

Are there any clues on the marriage ie. names of witnesses who could be relatives?

Are there any other BISHOPs in the area who may be relatied and thus give a clue as to his origins?

Most of the chairbottomers that I've come across have been itinerant workers often travelling throughout the county and beyond on a continual basis.

Thanks very much - I've looked at this site and none other than Tudeley appear.

I have looked at the original images and the transcription seems to be ok.

One of the marriage witnesses was a Brighton relative of his wife's but I must admit I haven't researched the other so that could be my next move.  Think I'll go down that route before I do a trawl of the 1841/1851 Brighton censuses to look for related Bishops.

Thanks for the pointers,  Pheno
