I have an ancestor who was born at St Mary's Barracks Gillingham Kent.  Can someone shed some light on this place and how i can find out about it.

St. Mary,s Barracks was built 1779-1782, initially to house convicts building the fortifications around Chatham / Gillingham. The Army occupied the site (various units / regiments) up to 1941 when the Royal Navy moved in. St. Mary's was demolished in the early 1960's.
In 1871 (Royal Welch Fusiliers) for example 864 persons were registered there, of whom 115 were wives, children etc
