1901 Census wording - Huddersfield
« on: Thursday 03 February 11 08:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I've just discovered a line of my family that has a James HANDS, born 1852 in Stourbridge, Worcestershire, as a head master at All Saints ..........

Please can anyone make out the last word in the occupation column of the 1901 census RG13; Piece: 4106; Folio: 141; Page: 31

Does the school still exist? And is it now All Saints Catholic College?

Regards

Mike

It looks like All Saints Paddock -then school is written above in different writing

Paddock is a district of Huddersfield

the secondary school in Paddock is Royds Hall but it did not become a school until 1921 - it was a large house and then a war hospital
so it won't be that school

If you look up "Paddock with Marsh" Huddersfield on Genuki
It reads Church is "All Saints" and there is a National School

so maybe that is where james was headmaster??

Thank you Suz for the quick and noteworthy reply.

As usual one question leads to another.  Is there an on-line directory to cross reference the school around 1900?

I have tried the Historical Directories site, but there is a hole around 1900, and James died in 1908.

Thanks again Suz

Hi

No it isn't the present All Saints catholic school.
The present All Saints is a new school and it was an amalgamation of several catholic schools that were due to close and so they didn't offend any of the old schools they called it All Saints.
