Convict **Completed Thanks**
« on: Friday 04 February 11 09:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I'm trying to find the crime committed by a lady called MaryKERSHAW(Kirshaw)

According to the Convict records (Ancestry), she was convicted 5th October1809(Kingston UponHull) and received a sentence of 7yrs in Australia (New South Wales)

I have her information once she arrived in NSW but can't find what her crime was.
(It can't have been too bad as 7yrs was only a "light" sentence in those days.  ::) )

Any answers, suggestions or ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Di

Hi Di :)

The Criminal Register for Mary says that she was sentenced for Larceny.  Not very descriptive!  I wonder if you can find her trial records...my ancestor was sentenced to 7 years for nicking some clothing in 1815 which might give you an idea of the level of larceny involved with your lady.

Cheers
Prue

Hello,

The Hull Packet newspaper for 10 October 1809 has this short report, part of the Quarter Sessions Report -

"Mary Kershaw (aged 19) charged with stealing and taking away 100 yards of ribbon, three beaver bonnets and three sheets, the property of Benjamin Margrave, pleaded guilty; sentenced to be transported seven years"

Yorkslass - That's a great find. Thanks ever so much.

Exactly what I was looking for.  :-*

Hi Prue - I also have convicts who were sentenced for larceny (most of them). One poor guy received "Life" for stealing a handkerchief  ::) - the rest were anywhere between 7 & 14 years. Thanks to Yorkslass, I now know all the details of Mary's crime and that's a fantastic result.

Many thanks
Di
