Tracing family crest for James Kidd family
« on: Friday 04 February 11 09:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone, Does anyone know the best way to find family crests?  Also, I got onto a website to look at the death cert for James Kidd (Master Mariner) but they want over $40 for it.  Is there a better website? Last question, I'm new at all this... James Kidd often has an M1 in the middle of his name.  Is this a reference to Master Mariner.
Thanks for your help.
Michelle.

Michelle, I think it may be the death certificate you are really looking for here?
Do you know when and where James Kidd died? If it was a death in England the certificate should cost under £10.
When you say "James Kidd often has an M1 in the middle of his name.  Is this a reference to Master Mariner. " where are you finding him listed this way. It sounds as if this might be from a source like online family trees as it doesn't make much sense for any maritime records that I can think on.

Added- see that you've also posted on this Kidd thread and it may be that someone will be able to help there-

Thanks everyone,
There has been a few different sites that list a M2 or M1 with the name.  eg James (M1) Kidd, not sure what it means.  I'll look into getting the death cert for James Kidd the Ancestry website said $43.  Any ideas on the family crest?
Thanks.

Death certificate can be ordered from GRO, England- do you have date and place of death?
Can you give us a link to where you've found "James (M1) Kidd" as it's still not clear where you've gotten this information. Is this one of the sites?

If so, it seems to be their way of telling various James Kidds apart and has nothing to do with any actual record.

Not all families had a crest- do you suspect that there should be one for James Kidd?

I've told you in previous post that death certificates can be ordered from GRO, England but just realised you haven't actually confirmed where James Kidd died.
If he's this James Kidd then looks like Australia? This is why it helps to give us as much information as possible when you are asking for help.

There is no such thing as a 'coat of arms for a surname.
Q. What is a crest?
A. It is a popular misconception that the word 'crest' describes a whole coat of arms or any heraldic device. It does not. A crest is a specific part of a full achievement of arms: the three-dimensional object placed on top of the helm.

Hi MichelleKidd

Welcome to RootsChat

I would think the lists that put M2 & M1 with his name are probably referring to 1st Mate & 2nd Mate as in his Mariner Certificate, just as MM would be Master Mariner.
