hedley carter bomber crash info?
« on: Friday 04 February 11 20:08 GMT (UK) »
my grandmother is looking for info about her brother. he was in a bomber crash on 3rd november 1942,

this is the info we have from the roll of honor.

Sergeant (Observer) 926380, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 3rd November 1942. Age 20. Son of Hedley Vicars Carter and Edith Lily Carter, of Wallisdown, Bournemouth. Buried in ST. MARK CHURCHYARD, TALBOT VILLAGE, Bournemouth. Grave 989.

my grandmother was in her early 20's at the time and never heard the full story to his death. she would love to know where the crash happened and any other details. now in her 90's she really doesnt want to be applying for documents and filling out paperwork, although she is the next of kin.
any information would be greatfully recieved

Hi Carole, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website might give you more info than you already have...

Try also, WR CHORLEY`s Bomber Command losses of 1942 reference book to see if it gives more details of the crash.

Unfortunately thats one volume l do not have otherwise l would check it for you myself. I am sure though that someone on here will come up with more info for you.

Good luck......

Steve.

Hi Carole,
From Bomber Command Losses by W. Chorley:
1484 Flight, Airspeed Oxford I, DF536.
Took off 1959 from Driffield for a night bombing exercise but almost immediately dived into the ground. Eye witnesses judged the height to be between 150 and 200 feet.
Accident investigators were unable to say what had caused the crash, but it is possible an explosion had occurred in the starboard engine, or in the wing itself.

The crew:
Warrant Officer 2   J J W Forster, RCAF +
Sergeant H W Carter +
Sergeant F J Faye +
Bomber Command 39/45.

Carole,
Glad to have been of assistance. Unfortunately I cannot offer any advice on where a photograph might be obtained but, hopefully, someone on here might have some idea where one might be obtained.
My regards to your Nan,
Bill.

Hi, I'm just completing ancestry files on all the children buried at Christ church, Sandown, Isle of Wight. I believe we have a baby here who would be related to your Mum. Kate Goldsworthy Carter died age 1 year in 1890, she was the half sibling of Hedley Vicars Carter 1881-1960 who if I have read your post correctly was your Mum's father?   Kates parents were Walter William Carter and Pee Tregear Goldsworthy
