Bruern had an Abbey from 1147 - 1536
The original name of the abbey was 'the church of St. Mary of the heath of Tretone (de brueria Tretonie)

The parish of Shipton under Wychwood included several villages including Bruern, Milton under Wychwood, Langley, Leafield, Lyneham, Ramsden.
George Selfe became vicar in 1640 according to the CHURCH OF ST MARY THE VIRGIN, SHIPTON UNDER WYCHWOOD, OXFORDSHIRE CHURCHWARDENS’ ACCOUNTS 1554-1696

I was slightly coming at this from an angle, in that I think there was a vicar there, but wanted to be 100% sure.

In the Oxfordshire Protestation Returns 1640-1 it has listed under the Bruern parish the following entry:-

Rob Harrris ibidem Minister

As you say, the Abbey had shut by then and been taken over by the Copes. Sir Anthony Cope would have been there at the time in question I think. Being a pretty puritanical chap, might he have had his own chapel somewhere in his house or on his grounds and kept a personal chaplain/vicar?
