Old Book found
« on: Tuesday 08 February 11 09:13 GMT (UK) »
Dear All,

Please bare with me as I am a total newbie to this. When going through some boxes yesterday I came across an old book, I've had it for years but can't remember how I came to own it. I think it was possibly in a box of books picked up at a car boot. I never thought much about it other than, oooh it's really old. The book is called Nursery Carols

Yesterday I was looking at the handwritten dedication in the front- it reads:

"Ethel Catherine Young,

On her fifth birthday

from her affectionate papa

22nd January 1863"

I posted this information on another forum, I know the book isn't worth a lot, but wanted to find out more about Ethel and her Papa.

Thanks to a lovely forumite over there who found this information incredibly quickly - It turns out "Papa" was of notable rank - Sir Edward Henry Fox Young - 5th Governor of South Australia. He was married to Lady Augusta Fox Young. They had several children, however Ethel died without marrying and having no children.

I now have a bee in my bonnet about trying to trace the other siblings and to see if there is any living descendant who would like the book back!

If anyone could help me with this I would be ever so grateful, I've not done anything like this before and genealogy and census' are all alien words to me!

Many thanks

Thank you Bryan!

I've never done this before - does Grand-duar mean Granddaughter of Augusta - so would have been Ethel's niece, as we think she had no children of her own.

How would I now go about finding if the girls married and had children themselves? I'm so sorry for being such a "noob".

TWB

Hi TWB
The census records always start with the Head of the houshold and the others in the house are labled with thier relationship to the Head. Well that's the way ir was supposed to be done.

A usefull place to find marriages etc is

OK this is getting strange! So Selina is a daughter to the Governor, therefore Ethel's sister - She married Neville L Walford, They had a son called Garth and a daughter called Norma? At the time of the 1901 census they were living in Warleigh House, nr. Plymouth. Warleigh House is a place I have visited a few times when it was a private residence, it's just down the road! It's now been converted to retirement flats I believe.

1911 census Garth Neville WALFORD is listed as Overseas Military age 28 born Sandford and he was married and may have had children.

FreeBMD has this marriage:
Marriages Dec 1907
TREFUSIS Elizabeth K M Exeter 5b 149
WALFORD Garth Neville Exeter 5b 149

After 1911 mothers maiden names are listed in the Index so we can find these births:
Births Mar 1912
Walford David N (Trefusis) St.Geo.H.Sq. 1a 829

Births Mar 1915
Walford Phyllida (Trefusis) Kensington 1a 195

So Garth WALFORD may have some living descendents.
