No Ray, the dongle device needed replacing so went over to home board band.  The dongle has been removed.

Yes, I,m connected to board band when the yellow cable is connecting the router and laptop but not when cable is discontinued.   Phoned my computer fellow and he thinks something is missing in my laptop so taking it in on Friday.  When I go into the control panel and eventually get to network connection there is no list there to connect to.

Thanks for your advice.

Hello Helina,

A couple of small things to check:
1) with the yellow cable plugged in:
when you type http://192.168.2.1 into your browser (IE or Firefox, etc) address box do you manage to get into your router programmes? If yes, can you see the box with SSID and a name/jumble of numbers and letters?
(this can be changed to something you like, and this is the name you should connect to when you get the wifi working on your computer.)
2) when you unplug the router's yellow cable do you also turn the router off or do you leave it on?

HI

First just prove that you can "see" the router from your laptop.
(with your yellow cable connected to both router and laptop)

Depending upon manufacturer, and model, of router, the most common (IP) addresses you could try....
192.168.1.1
192.168.1.2
192.168.2.1
in the  url box, centre-top of your browser window, (you shouldn't need http:// prefix)
if you then  "find" the router on one of thos addresses you will almost definitely be presented with a box asking for username/password. The username/password details together with the connection IP address will definitely be in the documentation you received in the box with your new b/band router.

Very common username and password  is "admin" and "admin"

At the library at present (free access to ancestry) so will try the suggestions given.

Pete,  Have had wireless in the past before going over to the dongle so know I have wireless access.  Have tried FN/F2.  The only slide or knob to turn the wireless on I cannot find.  There is a knob at back of computer, but when I go into network connection I have no list, so clicked on blue line to find connection, I get a small window coming up saying I must turn on the wireless via the slide/knob in the front or side of computer which I cannot find.

Helina

(no thanks needed)

As per Peteg's list............ what is the model of laptop that you have?
One of us can then look up the manual and see where the switch is (or isn't)

Cheers
