Looking for STURDEE in the England 1851 Census
« on: Wednesday 09 February 11 09:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
I'm trying to find: Edwin Thomas STURDEE (born 1816 in Deptford, London), his wife Flora (born abt 1818, married in 1847 in Islington, London) and their son Edwin James (born 1849 in Southampton) in the 1851 Census but have had not luck.
The family moved to Camberwell, London where their second son Herbert Beatson Sturdee was born in August 1851 (after the census).
Subsequent censuses have the family name spelled as Hurdee and other variations - I've tried them all but can't find them. Can anyone spot them?
Thanks for your time.
Nika

Did you ever have any luck with these? They are ancestors of mine, and I have a large Sturdee family tree compiled by some cousins. Let me know.

Hi - Welcome to Rootschat!
I didn't find them on the 1851 Census but I have the 1861 -1891 censuses. Did you find them on the 1851? If so, I'd love to have the info.
Thank you
Nika

May I just add something Nika, you could already know this but nothing lost if you do.

I haven't been able to find them yet in 1851, but in June 1850 when Walter Drew Sturdee was born they were living in Denmark Road, Camberwell St Giles. Edwin Thomas Sturdee was described as a Master Mariner.

By the time of Herbert Beatson's baptism in September 1851, they were living in Grove Lane, Camberwell St Giles.

I've carried out an address search on the streets mentioned and I haven't been able to come up with anything there. It makes you wonder if Edwin wasn't at home and if Flora was expecting a baby she could have been staying with someone and mistranscribed.

Welcome to RootsChat rimbault !  :) :)

Kind regards,

Pels.

Thanks Pels. Although I hadn't carried out an address search, I'd more or less come to the same conclusion as you. They must be there somewhere so I'll keep trying.
Thanks for looking.
