Ellen Parker 1881, Paddington
« on: Wednesday 09 February 11 20:36 GMT (UK) »
I would like to find out who Ellen's parents were and if she had any siblings.
Here is what I know: Ellen was born 25 Dec 1881. She married my husband's grandfather 2 Jan 1905. They eventually settled in Yorkshire where she died in 1959.
On the record of their marriage at St Mary Magdalene, Paddington her father is George Parker (a printer/painter) and the residential address is 94 Woodchester Street.
I don't have a date of birth for George and have not had any luck finding him in any census. Who were her family? What would be my next step?

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat

What is Ellen's birthplace on the 1911 census? Unfortunately the 1911 census is the one census you can't request a lookup on Rootschat. You must search it for yourself.

http://www.1911census.co.uk/

With that knowledge we might be able to help you find her on earlier censuses.

Hi and welcome!

You have an exact date for her birth - where did that come from?
Her birth cert would tell you of her parents.

Presumably you dont know where she was born, and the Paddington in the title relates to her place of marriage, not birth in 1881.
Good advice from Valdato find her in 1911 to ascertain a birthplace.
Then you can look for her birth on FreeBMD, and for her on earlier censues.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex

Hi

Her marriage details

The 1911 census might not be so easy to spot the family if the father was still in the army.

Hi
Thanks very much for your reply and the information regarding the infant who died. I was aware that they had had a child who died but did not know when or, what the child was called. This info puts in another piece. Why can I not find Ellen in any of the census 1891-1901?
James/Jim as he was called at home, was born in 1879 in Long Whatton, Leicestershire. His parents were William and Mash Hutchinson. James/Jim served in the army and I believe was stationed in Windsor around 1900.

Hi

Have you found the family on the 1911 census to confirm Ellen's birthplace? A free search looks to place them in Mansfield registration district. You would need to look at the full census to have Ellen's birthplace confirmed.

In the meantime a possible in Paddington

Hi
Thanks again for info. On the 1911 census Ellen's birthplace is listed as Paddington, as is William James'. I will follow the lead from Alfred Gittoss, whom I had already considered but discounted as Mary Ann is 21 years older than Ellen. Mary Ann's maiden name was Parker but I haven't been able to link her positively to my Ellen Parker. This is what makes this searching exciting!

Hi

It it is pefectly possible to have 21 years between siblings with families that might be as large as 12 children as this particular Ellen Parker proves.

1881 census RG11 1121 folio 18
Shipyard Arundel Sussex (1871 in Paddington)
George Osborn 55 Head Married Brewer's labourer Eastbourne Sussex
Mary A. Osborn 51 Wife Married Arundel Sussex
John Jacocks 63 Brother-in-law Unmarried Drover? Arundel Sussex
Walter Jacocks 21 Nephew General Labourer Arundel Sussex
Florence E. Parker 6 Niece Paddington London

Florence E Parker aged 17 is a servant in Hammersmith on the 1891 census with Josephine C Parker aged 19 born Paddington. Josephine on the 1881 census was the daughter of William Parker aged 43 born Holberton Sussex and his wife Harriet nee Jaycocks born Arundel.

1871 census RG10 2 folio 18
36 Brindley Street Paddington
William Parker 32 Head Married Mason Walberton Sussex
Harriett Parker 31 Wife Married Arundel Sussex
Mary A Parker 11 Daughter Chichester Sussex
Alfred Parker 7 Son Paddington Middlesex
Harriet Parker 5 Daughter Paddington Middlesex
Henry Parker 3 Son Paddington Middlesex
Phillips Parker 1 Son Paddington Middlesex
Sarah J Parker 3 Daughter Paddington Middlesex

22nd May 1881 St Augustine Paddington
Elvin Eleanor Parker parents William and Harriet, 29 Brindley Street Harrow Road, father's occupation marble mason

The evidence discounts this particular Ellen.
