Bernard Maguire and Helen McShane

Hi

Am trying to find Census records and BMDs for the above couple.  They were married in 1891 but can't find certificate on SP and can't find mention of them in the Census for 1891 or 1901.  They got married in Barrhead and had a son called James in 1905 - also in Barrhead.  Bernard was a miner so I'm assuming he worked in the many small pits in the area.  He may have come from Ireland originally.

If anyone can help with this - I'd appreciate it.

Have you looked at son James's, b. 1905, birth certificate? Scottish birth certs should include date and place of parents' marriage.

Sarah, the marriage is there. Indexed as Bernard McGuire and Ellen McShane in 1891 Renfrewshire.

Thanks Monica.  We have a copy of James's birth cert.

It says Bernard Maguire and Helen McShane got married Oct 1891 - so after the Census that year.  The place just says Barrhead - no church or other address.

James gets married in 1926 and the same parents names are mentioned.  I've tried variants of Maguire and substituting Ellen for Helen but no luck at all so far!

Hopefully from their ages at marriage, you should be able to find them in the censuses. Had a quick look in 1901 and not yet jumping out on the transcript

I'm stumped on my lack of progress with the 1891 and 1901 census.

Bernard is 26 in 1891 and Ellen or Helen is 19.

From the marriage cert, what were their parents' names? They might have been with family for the 1901 census.

Both sets of parents called John and Catherine!
