Styles and Speller Connection
« on: Friday 11 February 11 06:58 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the connection between John Styles who died 22 Oct 1880 late of Mandeville road Enfield Highway in  Middlesex a Gentleman and Charles Speller named in his will.

The connection between John Styles born c 1809 in Epping, Essex and Eliza Speller born c 1837 in Stratford or Strangford, Essex listed as his niece in the 1861 census. They were living in Enfield, Middlesex.

The above named Eliza (Speller now Aldridge head of household) and William Styles born c 1851 in Walworth, Surrey listed as visitor on the 1881 census. They were living at 64 Boston Road, Walthamstow, Essex.

In the 1891 census Eliza's son Charles George Aldridge born 1863 Middlesex listed as cousin was living with William A  born c1851 Walworth, Surrey head of house and Sarah A Styles born 1846 Stratford Essex Wid sis in law.

If someone could help me find the connection between the Styles and Speller families It would be much appreciated.

Hi (again) HS,

Are you positive that the Eliza, niece from 1861 and the Eliza who goes on to marry an Aldridge are one and the same woman?

In 1861, Eliza is shown as a widow, and there's a christening for her daughter Eliza as follows:
1 July 1860, Enfield Jesus Chapel : Eliza Maria Speller born 8 June, daughter of Joseph and Eliza Speller of Enfield Lock, father a plumber.

If I'm looking at the right marriage then the Eliza Speller who marries Charles Aldridge marries as a spinster (father William Speller, printer).
I agree that the presence of an Eliza Maria born Enfield Lock in the 1871 Aldridge family is perplexing.

Have you managed to find a possible Charles Speller at all? Does the will just mention his name, and nothing else at all?
"My dear, I think the English pronounce it 'appiness"

William Styles born 1851, believe his parents to be George STYLES and Mary Ann TARBUCK married 9 Jul 1842 at Southwark Christ Church. His father was Samuel STYLES, farmer. George was a biscuit maker, which he was in 1851.

Sarah Ann SPELLER, 26, spinster, -, Lambeth, father William Speller (deceased), Printer

Both signed in presence of Eliza Aldridge, W R Goldsmith

Looks like George and William STYLES were obviously brothers, and Sarah Ann STYLES nee SPELLER was a sister of Eliza ALDRIDGE nee SPELLER

I would say that John STYLES who died in 1880 was brother of George who married Mary Ann Tarbuck. There were two Johns born in Epping, one in 1807 a son of Joseph and Lettice and the other in 1808 a son of a Samuel and Anne.

1841 - HO107/323/13/West Ham/Essex/ED6/30/7
Chapple Street, West Ham, Stratford
William SPELLER, 30, Silk printer
Maria SPELLER, 25
John SPELLER, 6
Eliza SPELLER, 4
Sarah SPELLER, 1
Robert SPELLER, 30, Cordwainer
All born in county

From Familysearch
William SPELLER married Maria LAYLES 24 Aug 1834 at Waltham Abbey, Essex. I would hazard a guess that LAYLES is a mistranscription of STYLES

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who has replied to my post. You have all helped enormously.

I'll answer the questions you asked:
Have you managed to find a possible Charles Speller at all? I haven't found a Charles Speller marrying an Eliza in the right time frame nor one dying that fits.

Does the will just mention his name(Charles Speller), and nothing else at all?  I do not have a full copy of the will just an extract.

Are you positive that the Eliza, niece from 1861 and the Eliza who goes on to marry an Aldridge are one and the same woman? No I am not that is what I was trying to workout. Eliza Maria Speller ( daughter of Eliza in the 1861 census) who goes on to marry Charles Maguire a policeman (as was Charles Aldridge). Eliza Maria Speller and Charles John Maguire are my  3x great grandparents on their marriage certificate they signed in the presence of George Styles and Eliza Aldridge.

I could not find Eliza Maria Speller in the 1871 census Just Eliza Maria Aldridge.
I have the problem of finding the birth of Eliza Maria Speller who names her Father as Charles Speller on her marriage certificate.
Was there more than one Eliza Maria Speller born 1860 ?
or is this my Eliza =
1 July 1860, Enfield Jesus Chapel : Eliza Maria Speller born 8 June, daughter of Joseph and Eliza Speller of Enfield Lock, father a plumber.
or was Eliza Maria never baptised because she was Illegitimate?

The 1861 census was taken the night of April 7 if you go back 10 months (age of Eliza Maria ) It works out to be that she was born about June 1860. So did Eliza list Charles as her fathers name because that was the name of her step-father ( the only father she probably knew) or was her real fathers name Charles Speller?

I was trying to figure the connection between the Styles and Speller families to answer these questions but now I have even more questions. You love gotta genealogy it never ends!

Thank you
HS ;D
