A World War General
« on: Monday 14 February 11 09:47 GMT (UK) »
Sir Richard Haking, was a WWI general closely linked to the 1915-18 BEF Commander, Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig.
Haking, born in 1861, was the son of the vicar [not sure if this is the right terminology] of the old St. Paul's Church in Halifax.
The Reverend Haking married a Rachael Violet Burford-Hancock.
Having enormous trouble unearthing details of the general's childhood and education.
I will have a heart attack if anyone comes up with a family pic.
Here's hoping.
Regards to you all from a windblown and very wet Australia.

Hi,

FreeBMD shows Richard Cyril B, not the Rev. Haking, marrying Rachel Violette Burford-Hancock in SepQ 1891.     :-\

Nanny,
Can you spare a minute to explain to me how to pull the info. Not familiar with the BDM site at all and getting anywhere.
Regards,
Lezza.

Hi,

In the Search box on FreeBMD, select Marriages and type in Haking (surname) Richard (first name).  Select find.

Only one result.   SepQ 1891 Bromley.  Click on the number in blue (720).   That shows a list of all names on that page.

Checking 1901 census shows Richard Haking with wife Rachel.

Does that help?

His parents were Revd Richard Hakingand  Mary Elizabeth (née Byrne), daughter of a Brighouse card manufacturer.

Rachel, the daughter of Sir Henry James Burford-Hancock, died in 1939.

As for his education, the fact that no other schools are mentioned in his DNB entry implies that he was enrolled at Sandhurst at a young age.
