Hitchings in Edgeworth & Stroud
« on: Monday 14 February 11 17:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm researching a Hitchings (Hitchin) family who moved to Gloucestershire from Wiltshire sometime after 1779.

This was the family of Edward Hitchings and his wife Mary Lea. They had at least 4 children Giles b. 1773, Hester b. 1775, John b. 1777 & Ann b 1779. Edward and his son Giles were living in Edgeworth, near Gloucestershire by 1817. Giles & his wife Priscilla were publicans at Dunkirk village, Stroud in the 1841 & 1851 censuses.

If anyone has access to the Edgeworth village and Stroud BMD records I would be much obliged if they could do a Hitchings search from 1780 to about 1820.

There is also a Hitchings/Hitchins family who seem to have been in Bisley, Gloucs. & Oaksey, Wilts.  If anyone has access to the Bisley BMD records could they do a search for any Hitchings between 1780 and 1820.

I would be eternally grateful.

Best wishes,

Craig

Craig,
Here are some to start with:

Edgeworth 1775 - 1812
Bapt.   16 June 1781  Charles son of Edward & Mary Hitchings
Bapt.    23 June 1783  Mary dau. of Edward & Mary Hitchings
Bapt.   22 Jan. 1785  Elizabeth dau. of Edward & Mary Hitchings
Bur.   16 Oct. 1785   Elizabeth dau. of Edward & Mary Hitchings
Bapt.   30 Jan. 1786  Elizabeth  dau. of Edward & Mary Hitchings
Bur.     30 April 1786  Elizabeth dau. of Edward & Mary Hitchings

That's all on that fiche. There may be more between 1812 and 1820.
The poor souls didn't have much luck with their Elizabeths.

Hi duport,

That's great.... very many thanks.
Edward & Mary must have moved from Sherston Magna to Edgeworth 1779-81.
Thanks for taking the trouble for me. It's frustrating trying to piece all the bits and pieces together and gather info from a distance.  I'm in Edinburgh and can't make it to Chippenham to the Record Office more than once a year.

Hi again Duport,

Many thanks again for these baptisms.  It's opened up a new line of Hitchings.... Charles was a Gardner, moved to Bristol and had a family of 8. I'm not sure what happened to Giles' & Charles' surviving siblings though, i.e. Hester, John, Ann & Mary?

However I think father Edward might have died in Stroud / Bisley in 1842 aged 89 years.  Can I impose on your better nature again and ask if you would be able to look at the Edgeworth records before 1842 for wife Mary's death / burial.  I know nothing about her.  They might of course have moved to Bisley sometime, but Edward was "of Edgeworth" in 1817.

Many thanks
