FINDING GRAVES/DEATH DETAILS
« on: Tuesday 15 February 11 09:45 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Edward Davies (his Christian names were sometimes reversed)  sailed on the "Victorian" from Liverpool to Saint John New Brunswick  on 13 March 1906.    His wife Martha and her son Fred (surname could be Slater, but may have changed to Davies/is) aged 7 sailed on the "Empress of Ireland" from Liverpool to St John NB via Halifax on 14 December 1906.

According to the three surviving daughters of John and Sarah Blackham, "Uncle Ted" went with his second wife Martha to Canada.    At some time he had a job as the manager of an ice rink in Toronto and did well enough to buy some houses which he rented to other English people who had emigrated to Canada.   The houses were of wooden construction.

Again, according to the three ladies, his wife's son died, quickly followed by his wife.   This caused Ted to have a breakdown of some description leaving him unable to cope.   His father, Thomas Davis, paid for a member of the choir of his local church (presumably St Marks, Tipton :o) to travel to Canada to bring Ted back home, where he lived until the end of his life.

My question is: with this vague information, would it be possible to find the graves/death details of Martha and Fred?

http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/
 - they are here in 1911 in Toronto (1911 / Ontario / York South / 43 Toronto / page 20 )
Edward T Davis, wife Martha, and Frederick S. Slater.

Do you know what Martha's maiden name was, and the names of her parents?

Hi,

As the family lived on Nairn Ave. odds are that Martha & Fred are buried in Prospect Cemetery just a few blocks from their home.

http://www.interment.net/data/canada/ontario/york/toronto/prospect/prospect.htm

You might be able to get more info by contacting the cemetery offices or on the Ontario Genealogical Society cemetery locator site.

If Edward/Thomas was the manager of an ice rink you may also want to contact the city archives as the rinks are owned & operated by the city. They might have some record of him.

Good hunting.

The death registration that I located on Ancestry (if it's the correct one) indicated that Frederick was single.  Sorry, forgot to include that info.

Thank you all so much for your help - this has puzzled me and my cousins for years.    All we had were vague memories from very old ladies (all since deceased - in their 90s).    Daft as it is, I find the information exciting - it clears so many questions and allows me to fill in blanks in my very extensive family tree.

Again, my thanks.  Regards BCB

to Jorose:

Martha's maiden name was Ashley daughter of Peter & Comfort Ashley, she was married firstly to David Slater in Tipton, Staffordshire, England who died 1900 and then married Thomas Edward (or Edward Thomas) Davies on 18 May 1902 at St John's Church, Tipton.

Ah, think I can see Martha, then:
https://www.familysearch.org/
she died in 1929; Martha Davis, father listed as Peter "Ashby" and mother as Comfort (at least on this version of the database).

Also have a look at:
http://www.archive.org/
(search for toronto directory)

Jorose:   Thank you for your information.   From what you say Thomas only survived her by five years - he died on 30 December 1934.   Any idea of her date of death, and was it Thomas that notified the authorities?

I have tried the suggested internet sites on line, but without success.
