BOWIE/CRAIG Renfrewshire...Brickwall!
« on: Tuesday 15 February 11 09:47 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find any ifo on my ancestor Allan Bowie/Buie b.Abbey Paisley 1762, and his spouse Agnes Craig/ Craige b 1764. They were both from Johnstone and probably Low Church. Her line is also "Andrew", and I got their marriage details from their site.
I have a copy of their marriage from Scotlandspeople but no-one can find his parents. I have tried all the usual places, but although there were many Allan Bowie, blacksmiths, I cant find this one's parents.
I am decended through his son John and Jane/Jean Thomson.
Any help please.
Lyn.

Hi
My paternal grandmother was a Bowie from Dreghorn  who married a Love. The Love family came from Paisley area. John Love married Margaret Patersoune in Paisley abbey. so there is aconnection between the Loves and Bowies in the paisley area

Hi there, welcome to Rootschat both of you newbies

I have had a look for any parents married around the year 1762
and the only ones that look good are

Allan Bowie married a Agnes Stewart at Govan in 1762

I cannot find a Allan Bowie/Buie c at Abbey Paisley in 1762
but there are three couples having children around that date
in Abbey Paisley
They are
John Bowie married a Sara Montgumbrie
William Bowie  and Elizabeth Crawford
Allan Bowie married Agness Castels (Cassells)  his Dad is called James
I havent done too much checking on these three couples but maybe one
of them had a Allan as well? I havent had time to check what dates these
couples married yet.

I did see the marriage of Allan Buie and Agnes Craige on 17th June 1786
that means they were 16 and 18 years old
Will have another look tomorrow as its getting late now

Hi Lyn,
Where did you find the information for Allan Bowie birth 1762 Paisley and Agnes 1764 - I can only
find one Allan Bowie 1762 on the IGI born Galston, father Hugh.

Hi,
Thanks for the interest. I got the info on their dates when researching the wife, Agnes's maternal line of ANDREW. It popped up on a net search for trees, and I was so surprised to get a strike that I forgot to bookmark it! A clue is that all of this line seem to be blacksmiths. The naming pattern always has a John and certianly an Allan, and laterly a Robert. If you do Ancestry.co.uk, my tree is there. It ends in South Africa where the male line continues as Kerr Bowie.

Hi Lyn
Me again, I'm a wee bit confused.  You say Allan Bowies spouse is Agnes Craig but I googled and found another entry of your own (ancestry aid) saying his wife is Janet Andrew - have I misread this .

PS Quarrelton is within walking distance to where I live - years ago it was a village on its own separate from Johnstone.

Hi,
My mistake. Agnes Craig's mother was Janet Andrew! One gets confused by the generations.
I believe there is a headstone or MI in the churchyard in Johnstone to John B and his wife Jane /Jean Thomson. Any chance of you getting a sighting of this for me to confirm it? I was thinking of visiting this summer to see it. The only churchyard I could see in Johnstone( on google earth), was the High church. They were Low. Could this be the correct one? I cant believe you are on the spot. What a co incidence!
Lyn.

Hi Lyn
Think the only graveyards are Abbey Cemetery Elderslie and the High Church.  Don't know of a
Low Church - think that may be Low Parish Paisley which is totally different.  Its difficult to follow as I dont have all your details (not on Ancestry).  What info do you have that is saying low church?
Also they are a lot of unmarked graves as most people could not afford headstones.
