Fanny Levine b1904 and parents
« on: Tuesday 15 February 11 19:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for any information on Fanny Levine born 8th September 1904 in Stepney, London or her parents. She married Myer Cohen in 1931 and died in 1946.

I have the birth, death and marriage index records from Ancestry but I'm looking for records which include her parents names. They were born in Russia and moved to the East End of London. They were called Woolf Levine and Beila Lavatt.

I've found a 1901 census with Woolf as a child living in Whitechapel which could be him (also born in Russia) but I'm hoping to find more evidence it is him before making an official link. If this was him, his mother was also called Fanny (he have named his daughter after his mum?). The birth date is also a good match (1886).

I can't find anything at all on Beila.

Thanks in advance

Marc

Hi

Have you made a search of the 1911 census for them. Requesting searches for the 1911 census is at present not allowed on Rootschat. You must search the census for yourself.

http://www.1911census.co.uk/

On a free search the Woolf you mention - surname spelt the same as on the 1901 census 'Levene' appears to be in Shoreditch, which is where his parents are. No sign of a Fanny born 1904 though.

Hi Valda,

Yes, I have found the same record on the 1911. It was quite a while ago - I'd forgotten! (thought I'd give this another go:)

I now don't think that this Woolf is the one I'm looking for. On the 1911, he is 25. He would have been a father and had his daughter by now - not living with his parents.

Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't have checked my old 1911 search without the prompt.

Any other help appreciated!

Can you point us to the birth registration index entry you have found for Fanny? I am struggling with it. (Have found the marriage to Myer and her later death).

Do the parents' names come from her birth certificate or another source?  If you have the birth certificate, what was the address given at the date of the birth?
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

Thanks for the reply.

Maybe I got the birth index wrong.  It's from 1906. Fanny was definitely born 8/9/1904 in Hogarth House, Batty Street, Stepney. I think I got it from the wedding cert which I no longer have in my possession (I'm working on viewing it again though!).

Hi

There was a Batty Street in St George in the East just off Commerical Road

Births Dec 1904
Levine  Fanny     St. Geo. East  1c 302

How have you established that was her birth registration and not for instance

Births Jun 1904
LEVINE  Fanny    W.Ham  4a 142

Only her age would be given on her marriage and death certificate, not her date or place of birth. Her father's name and occupation should be given on both if her birth was legitimate.

Hi Valda,

Commercial Road is the right area. My grandparents are from there.

Her father, Woolf was a teacher of hebrew in 1931. I must have got this for the wedding cert as the date matches up.

I really think I need to see the paperwork again!

In 1911, Myer (her husband to be) lived 2 streets away from Batty Street (Christian Street) so thats another match.

Some sources (including naturalisation petitions) give "Hogarth House(s)" addresses on Christian Street, so it may have been a development/estate (as we would call it now) which sprawled between Christian Street and Batty Street.
