James Lewis abt 1840 Manchester
« on: Tuesday 15 February 11 23:54 GMT (UK) »
I have hit a wall with James Lewis a tailor b abt 1840 Manchester .I cannot verify his birth details or find his parents and would appreciate any help. His first child William Ernest was born in 1866 at The Green,Darlaston Staffs to his wife Sarah nee Freeman.A second child Henry was born abt 1868. He married Mary Anne Webster of Pleck, Walsall on Dec 19th 1870 at All Saints church Moxley Staffs. when both were resident at Darlaston. On the marriage cert.James is described as a widower and a tailor but his fathers name and occupation are not given. He takes his two children into this second marriage and I can find this family in the 1871 census at The Green, Darlaston and in the 1881 census at Shaw Hall Bank Saddleworth . James dies in October 1881 at Miller Hey Mossley (Ashton under Lyne). I cannot find records of James' birth registration, any census records prior to 1871 ,his marriage to Sarah Freeman or the death of Sarah.

Are you sure Sarah's maiden name was Freeman?  There is an 1864 marriage in Wolstanton to a Sarah Furnival

There is no 1871 entry in Staffs for a James Lewis with a wife Sarah

Hi , thanks for the help. The maiden name is clearly Freeman on the birth certificate. There are a few James Lewis' born in Manchester or nearby at the time & almost all can be eliminated,so I was hoping for some further information from the Freeman marriage cert. or earlier censuses if I could locate the documentation.

PS The first child from the Freeman marriage was born in April 1866 so I expect any marriage would be before or around this date.
