Picken from Glasgow
« on: Monday 18 April 05 21:22 BST (UK) »
Looking for ancestors

? Picken (Richmond or Richard's father) owned a printing press in Glasgow.  His first name, wife's name and children other than Richmond/Richard are unkown.

Richmond or Richard Picken (d- 1943) married Mary Crossley (d-1944)

Children
James (b. 1897 d. 1973)
Dick (Richmond or Richard)
Mary (May)
Margaret (Maggie)
Bella
Kate
John (married Betty)

James Picken married Agnes Mackrell
Richmond Picken (1924) - born in Bo'ness West Lothian
May (1922 - 1994) - born in Glasgow

Mary Picken was a midwife, her first "customer" was my father, Richmond Picken.  I think she may have gone for schooling in Edinburgh.

Richmond Picken moved to Canada in 1948 and married Shirley Ellis

Children
James Stewart
Nancy Arlene
Sherry Lorraine
Maureen Sharon
Kelly Ann
Shawn Richmond

Any info on the Picken family from my Grandfather (James) and up would be grateful.  My fathers thinks Mary Crossley may have been from Perthshire area.

Thank you,

Kelly

Kelly,

I presume you have seen the entries for Richmond PICKEN in the IGI at:
http://www.familysearch.org

It seems an unusual name and likely to have run in a particular family?

The IGI lists:
*Richmond Hutchison PICKEN, b 1874, Anderston Glasgow Lanarkshire, parents John Wardlaw PICKEN and Agnes  PICKEN
*Richmond PICKEN, b 1869, Neilston Renfrewshire, parents James PICKEN and Agnes - note added later; this should read Mary - YOUNG
*Richmond PICKEN m Janet TAYLOR 1833, entries in Bonhill Dunbartonshire and Cathcart Renfrewshire
These are all entries extracted from church registers.
There are also two entries submitted by LDS member for a Richmond PICKEN ca 1792 who is said to have married an Isabella ROBERTSON (there are extracted entries for children of this couple).

You can search in the IGI for other members of the above families.

However, your best option is to begin by searching for more recent events on ScotlandsPeople at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
It is a paying site.

Available on this site are births to 1904, marriages to 1949 and deaths to 1954.

There you should be able to download the birth certificate of James b 1897 and, more importantly, the marriage certificate of his parents.  The marriage certificate should list the ages and occupations of the parties and, for both bride and groom, the father's name and occupation, and the mother's name and maiden surname.  You will then be able to work back from this.

Good Luck,

JAP
PS: Just had a look.  There is only one PICKEN-CROSSLEY marriage on ScotlandsPeople and it is 1892.  Forenames are Richard and Mary.  And only one PICKEN-MACKRELL marriage (forenames are James and Agnes) and it is in 1921.  I did not view either record.

Mo, how very generous of you.

Apologies for my typo; I typed James PICKEN and Agnes[sic] - instead of Mary - YOUNG for the parents of Richmond b 1869, Neilston, Renfrewshire. James and Mary married in Neilston in 1865 and - from the IGI - had at least the following children:
James 1862
Isabella 1867
Richmond 1869
Thomas 1871
all in Neilston.

The parents of James senior (above) -  Richard/Richmond/Ritchard PICKEN and Isabella/Isobel/Isobell/Isobella ROBERTSON/ROBERTON - were married 11 Feb 1816 and had at least the following children (all these events are extracted entries):
David bap 3 Mar 1822
Janet b 4 Jul, bap 25 Jul 1824 Gorbals, Lanarkshire
James bap 13 Jul 1828
David b 12 Jan 1832
Elizabeth Brownlee b 10 Nov 1838
Apart from Janet 1824, all the above events (including the marriage) were in Abbey (Paisley), Renfrewshire.

Here's another snippet from Googling which might be relevant.

From: Click Here
An Isabella PICKEN married a Thomas THOMSON (b 9 Feb 1868).  Thomas's father, James THOMSON, was a calico machine printer in Barrhead (like Isabella's father James PICKEN, eh).

Thank you so much to both of you.  My parents arrive today for a visit and this will be an early Birthday present for my father.

I thought I had posted a thank you the other day to JAP but I don't see it.  My apologies for it not being there.

Again, I thank you and with my mother here we will be able to get onto Scotlands People.

Kelly,

Not a word about Mo or JAP to your parents!

You will find you need to polish up your credit card if you go to ScotlandsPeople - and it's easy to get carried away and spend far too much!

So do remember that actual images of the entries in the old church registers (pre the start of Statutory Registration in 1855) are not (yet) available on ScotlandsPeople.  In general (though not always) you can get the same information pre-1855 as is on SP for free from the online IGI on the FamilySearch site.  And often there are entries additional to the online IGI on the Scottish Church Records CD which can be consulted for free at LDS FHCs.

But don't forget that, in the IGI, you need to search separately for Richmond vis-a-vis Richard/Ritchard.  And for ROBERTSON vis-a-vis ROBERTON.

If you want to see the full entries in the church registers, you can - for a small fee - order in the actual films of the church registers to your local LDS (Latter Day Saints) FHC (Family History Centre) - locations are listed on the FamilySearch site.

Hope you all have fun!

Mo and Jap

Again, thank you so much.  I couldn't take the credit for your work though so I told my parents who were very surprised and said "many thanks".  I heard many stories that I had not heard growing up and was able to fill in some blanks.  Dad still does not know all his cousins names but we will be able to get them from the sources you gave earlier, unfortunately my mother and I didn't have time to get on line.  They enjoyed their trip and learning about Dad's ancestors, it's amazing that he lived across the street from some relatives and didn't know them very well.

Must go.  Again, many thanks and I'd hug you both if I could.
