VAIL of Maidenhead
« on: Saturday 19 February 11 21:58 GMT (UK) »
Would it be possible for someone with access to the Parish Registers to check for the birth/baptism of Elizabeth VAIL born c1794 at Maidenhead, I'm afraid I don't know the parents.

Thank you for any assistance.

Since Maidenhead did not exist as a separate parish at that time, the baptism ought to appear in either Bray or Cookham parish records.  Unfortunately there are no Vail baptisms in the CofE records as recorded on the IGI.

How reliable is the information?

Hello:  Thank you both for your responses.  Yes, I am still interested in finding this information.

The information regarding her birth place comes from the 1851 census.  ???   The c1794 comes from her age at burial (1855).

Hello Glenys,
I looked thru the index's of both Bray and Cookham today. No Vail :( or other simalar name in either.

Could it be possibly another 'local' parish.. Holyport, Binfield, Fifield etc..

I can always take another look next time I go 'home'

Regards, Lesanne.

Sorry, Lesanne, but Holyport and Fifield would both appear in the records of Bray.  Neither was or is a separate parish.  Though I grant you Binfield is  ;)

Hi Lesanne:  Thanks for going through those records for me.

Let me do some more sleuthing and then get back to you.  I am so good at finding people who are not from where they say they are!!  I do appreciate your efforts on my behalf.

I will send another message here when I have more to go on.  Have a great day.

I cannot see her on the 1851 census. The other thing I noticed is that there two trees on GR containing Elizabeth Vails with a Maidenhead birthplace.
Skewis (Wales and Scotland), Ayers (Maidenhead, Berkshire), Hildreth (Berkshire)

This is Elizabeth VAIL SMITH on the 1851 census:

1851 Census Lambeth, Kennington, 4 Upper Kennington Lane, Lambeth, Surrey  HO107/1573/157 p9:
Jonah Smith Head Mar 65  Corn Dealer (Master)  Wootoon Oxfordshire
Elizabeth Smith Wife Mar  57                                 Maidenhead, Berkshire
Frances M. Smith Niece Unm  16                         Westminster, Middlesex
Ann Bennett, Servant Widow 47                          Cookham, Berkshire

Interestingly enough, Jonah was baptised 20 Jan 1793 at St. Mary Lambeth, Surrey.  I can find nothing on the birth/baptism for his wife, Elizabeth VAIL.  She was buried 10 March 1855 at Norwood Cemetery, Lambeth, Surrey.  Age given 61 years.
