I'm trying to trace my great-grandfather - Henry Christian, b. Co. Wicklow, Ireland in 1853. Grateful for any help or tips.

Full civil records began in Ireland in 1864 so you will need to check for parish records to try to find Henry's baptism. To do this you  need to know the family religion and where in co. Wicklow the family lived - i.e. townland, town or parish.

Do you have details of Henry's marriage ?

Marriage certs usually give father's name and occupation, which would help confirm any possible baptism you may find.

Thanks Shane. I'll check out the links you gave later.

The only info I have is this:

Edith GRANT 20, spinster, Hillside Fareham.
Both signed married by licence.

In the presence of Jane GRANT & May Jane RAGAN.

There's a possible match for his father John on Griffith's valuation at an address of Woodenbridge Row in Wicklow town. This record is dated 1854.

According to his army papers he was Church of England.

Mother named as Mary Ann Hogan (or Regan?) 44 Deugille (Denzille?) Street Dublin

The reference to his mother as next of kin might date from the time he joined the army in 1875 aged 23. It was later struck out and replaced with "wife Edith". So some time between 1875 and 1888.

Could be Mary Ann Rogan.

There was a marriage in Dublin 20 June 1867:

Mary Ann Christian, widow, father Benjamin Carter
and
William Rogan, father William Rogan
