ROGERS family
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 13:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi looking for info on the Rogers family who lived in Avebury.  My Father was John Rogers and lived with his grandfather on a farm in Avebury, as his mother died in her 30's, unmarried.

Hi janek,

I too am looking for information on the Rogers family. What a small world it is.
My late mother's father was "Walter Robert Rogers". His address is given as "Fyfield Hill", Fyfield, presumably the small village near Marlborough. His occupation was said to be a twine twister, although I have seen him referred to as just a farm labourer, and my mother did tell me that he also worked as a "ganger/labourer" on a road mending crew.

My theory is that due to the lack of transport, in the 19th century, people did not stray far from where they were born, so that any persons in the county of Wiltshire with the name of Rogers must be looked at.

I shall have to dust down my notes and come up with the details I have so far. However, information tells me that he was married on 1. 7. 1900 to my grandmother Harriet Ellen Mabbutt, in a church in Marlborough.  I don't have his date of birth, but my best guess would be around 1870, give or take 10 years.

Is this helpful? I shall review all of my notes and get back to you.

Best wishes, Dave

Hi all,

Dave it looks like in 1901 he was going under Robert only;
1901 Census
14 Kingsbury Square,
Marlborough, Wiltshire
RG13/1925/9/10
Robert ROGERS, 40, Head, Mar, Agricultural? Engine Driver, born Romsey, Hampshire
Harriet Rogers, 25, Wife, Mar, born Wootton Rivers, Wiltshire
Kathleen Rogers, 2, Daug, born Marlborough, Wiltshire
William MABBETT, 7, No extra info, born Marlborough, Wiltshire

Marriage Reg;
MABBUTT, Harriet Ellen, Sept 1900. Marlbro, 5a 187
On the same page is Walter ROGERS

Birth Reg;
Harriet Ellen MABBETT (note spelling)
June 1876, Pewsey, 5a 179

Mmm interesting and I just found this whilst about to post previous info;
England/Wales Marriages 1538-1940
Walter ROGERS, Age 30, Father JAMES Rogers
Harriet Ellen MABBUTT, Age 25, Father JOSEPH Mabbutt
01 July 1900, Marlborough, Wiltshire
(IGI has it as at St Peter and St Paul)

So two quandries,
How old was Walter Robert Rogers really?
Was William Mabbett born c 1894 Harriets Son?

1891 Census Harriett is age 14 and living with Parents JOSEPH, born c 1854 and SARAH 1856, Wootton Rivers, Wiltshire.
(just ask if you dont have Census access and I will type up)
1881/1891 Census Joseph is a Twine Finisher.

Joseph MABBETT married March 1876, Pewsey, 5a 239
On the same page is Sarah HISCOCK also as Hircock

Hi Trish,

Thanks for the details. In the past, I have concentrated more on the Mabbutt side of the family, because to me, it is a much less common name than Rogers.
( By the way, I also have relatives with the Surnames "Orsman" and "Minturn" and I hope to trace these also.)

I think he definitely married in 1900 and from the details, his father seems to have been James Rogers, married to "Mary A" which could be Mary Ann Flay.
When I traced this backwards, it seems that James Rogers was born in 1830 and his wife in 1829. They lived in "Dauntsey, Wiltshire. The father of James Rogers was Broom Rogers and I shall try to work this backwards because "Broom" is a really unusual Christian name.

I am off to have a look on Google to see where Dauntsey is.

Did you originally come from Wiltshire?

Best wishes,

Dave

Hi Trish,

Thank you very much for the details. I did get back as far as Broom Rogers, but I missed the possible second wife. Thanks for all of the details, as there are sites that you have found that I have never looked at.

The christian name Broom is so unique that anybody with that name must be considered to have been an ancestor I would think. Thank you very much.

Best wishes,

Dave :)

HI all

I dont think we were related to the Rogers  family of Fyfield, My Dad doesnt thingk we were related, he can remember them as being very tall.  Our real name was now apparently Greenaway, not Rogers (the name Rogers was taken by a marriage.
