Locating Death inquest reports
« on: Tuesday 22 February 11 13:30 GMT (UK) »
My Gt. Grandfather William James Brown, worked as a pipefitter at 'Messers Brothertous ?' Jam factory at Litherland, Liverpool when on the 3rd October 1915 he was involved in a terrible accident and was showered in Steam..

He survived for approximately 3 hours but died shortly after in Bootle Hospital.

I have a copy of the death certificate which states that an inquest was held on the 6th October 1915 and I was wondering if there was any way of getting more details of what happened..somehow.

Many thanks

Chris

Have a hunt around for the nearest libraries and try to find out if any have a family/local history dept.

As you have a precise date they should be able to check any local newspapers of the time for a piece on the accident and/or inquest.

I've been able to do this kind of thing in the East Midlands and Lancs and it only cost a couple of pounds on each occasion.

The survival of coroners' reports is patchy, as they are not required to deposit them in the local archive, and when they do the records are closed for 75 years after the event, no longer applicable to a 1915 inquest of course! The best source of such reports is in the local press, but be prepared, the reports are usually extremely graphic and detailed.

Looks like it might be Brothertons at Litherland, which was a munitions factory slightly later during WW1 http://eprints.worc.ac.uk/384/6/ChapterFour.pdf and prior to that the Brotherton's factory site at Lanstar was a tar distillery (could it say tar, rather than jam on the death certificate do you think?) with a lot of nasty residues http://epppublications.com/Documents/09-3-1.pdf

The direct phone number for the Local History dept @ Crisby library is shown on that page, and if you click the Crosby library link there is also an email address.
