Winsford and Little Budworth
« on: Tuesday 22 February 11 19:30 GMT (UK) »
Isn't it amazing how things change from when one was a child ::)  I lived in Little Budworth for many years, and attended Winsford Verdin County Grammar School in the late 1950s.

For some reason, today, I thought of Winsford Flashes and wondered how they got their name.  I'm still not absolutely sure even after looking at various websites, but assume that they were the result of the salt mines?

I also found Budworth Country Park - which I knew as Budworth Common, and walked through on my way to school.  Later this was the place where we had various dens and played lots of games, and later still it was a huge carpark for Oulton Park Racing Circuit with the "gallops" down the side of the Coach Road.  What makes it a country park?  Other than it is in the country  ::)

I've obviously lost touch, but  ???  I'd love to know!

The Winsford Flashes were caused by "wild brine" pumping, not salt mines. The serious subsidence was confined to the valley where the salt works, with their brine shafts, were situated along the banks of the river.

To be absolutely honest, I don't know.  I'm sure it was still going when I left the village in 1964, but I'll try and find out the correct year.

If your mum lived in Little Budworth in the 40s, 50s or early 60s, then I probably know her.  This photograph was taken I'm sure about 1945/6 and was obviously in one of the nissen huts in Oulton Park, and I'm positive that all the children from the village are on it.  I'm the second from the left on the front row - with my finger in my mouth - and I was Susan Kendall in those days.  I'm also hoping that it was the Americans who put up the Union Flag as it's upside down  :o ::)

Yes, I remember Phyllis.  Give her my regards.  I'm sure she will recognise a few faces on that photograph.  Small world, isn't it?  Especially as it was such a small village in those days, and lovely, as you say.  I haven't been back now for a few years, since Joyce Cliffe died, and the time before that was for her daughter Helen's  funeral.

Yes my father did have the Post Office, and before that it was my grandad who ran it.
