Cheshire Workhouse Records
« on: Wednesday 23 February 11 09:41 GMT (UK) »
I have 3 certain possibly more names that are are being looked at, who were in the Cheshire Workhouse 1880-1900
Reasons for being there as per LDS records are given as so: birth, admittance, religious creeds.
"Birth" is self explanatory.
"Admittance" would appear to cover all general issues...destitution etc.
"Rel.Creeds" is somewhat puzzling. It is apparent that the institution qualified it's records according to the inmates religious beliefs[creeds] but why would that be given as the cause of entry?
Is it perhaps a coded way of stating that the inmates local religious authority/ administration had refused the inmate help and so the person entered the workhouse?
Or does it reflect a belief that the inmates rel.beliefs caused them to enter the workhouse...i.e. self-admittance because of religious qualms and doubts?
Thanx

Religious creeds was not a cause of entry. Most admission registers note the name, age, occupation, marital status, parish of settlement, religion, and perhaps a physical description of each pauper who was admitted. The reason why relief was granted should also be noted.

In 1869, the already voluminous record-keeping carried out by the workhouse authorities was added to by the introduction of a new Creed Register which recorded each inmate's admission details together with their religious affiliation. Although this information was already being recorded in other registers, the new Creed Register was intended to be placed at the workhouse lodge and be available for inspection by any person with a legitimate interest. It thus allowed local ministers periodically to monitor for new arrivals who might be in need of their services. http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/religion/religion.shtml

Hi Stanmapstone,
Thanx. Your answer makes much sense.
LDS records appear to have no further info on actual details of entry to w/h.
Nat.Archives has blurb on Cheshire W/H stating many records were destroyed and likely that their info is limited. Presumption is that Chester R/O will say same.
Question: what is liklihood other records may exist and if so, do you have any idea where one might find such? I have already looked at inmate name rosters and do not find my people listed on any.

Hi Stan,
I appreciate your efforts
I have previously looked at the sites you have given but checked them again to be sure none were missed. I did not find my "names" in the dates covered :1881 census. I will do some checking on the 1891 since the dates I have are quite broadly separated. And maybe the Nat.Archives does have the material.
Thankyou kindly
Rodc
