Seeking Mary Pywell of Benefield c1800
« on: Thursday 24 February 11 03:33 GMT (UK) »
COMPLETED - I am seeking information about the parents and siblings of Mary Pywell, born in Benefield around the late 1700s.  She married Samuel Thorpe in 1831 and may have moved to Isleworth, Middlesex soon after.  Anyone know anything?
Many thanks :)

Welcome to rootschat jbarnes.

I take it you have already seen this submitted record on the IGI?:

Mary Pywell
b 5 Nov 1802
chr 25 Dec 1802
Benefield

father Duke
mother Susanna

There are also a number of other children born to the same couple.

How did you estimate Mary's birth at late 1700's?

Confirmation that the IGI record is correct as same records appear on FreeREG. Mary's birth is given as 6th Nov 1802. Not sure if this is the correct family but there are six other children born to this couple. Three of them died young - buried St Mary.

Duke Pywell married Susanna Bowman
Benefield St Mary The Virgin
10 Mar 1800
groom parish: Thorpe Achurch
wit: William CUnnington and John Wilson
Duke signed Susanna made her mark

Duke Pywell
b 18 Mar 1775
chr 17 Apr
St Mary Benefield
father William
mother Elizabeth

All info from FreeREG.
Several Pywell families in Benefield.

Maybe Duke is Marmaduke? There is a Marmaduke b 1775 and Susanna in Benefield in 1841 census. Loads of Pywells in Northamptonshire ...

I'll wait for your response before I continue, possibly too far along the wrong track ...

Thanks Ruskie, you certainly have put in a bit of work into the Pywells.  Yes, there were a lot of them in the area, and trying to identify which one married Samuel Thorpe is part of the problem.

I calculated her age from the 1851 UK Census, in which she is recorded as 60 years old (Samuel was 48) - I have not been able to find her in either the 1841 or 1861 census to confirm if the figure is accurate or not.  If the number is 10 years out than Duke and Susannah would fit the timeframe. I will have a closer look at the other children for any mention of them in my 'tree'.

Thanks again for your input - much appreciated.

Um, stranger things have happened but Mary being 60 while Samuel is 48 in the 1851 census, makes me a little suspicious. Especially as they have a 9 year old daughter making Mary 51 when she gave birth to her. Or perhaps Mary's year of birth is incorrect.

What evidence do you have that Mary and Samuel moved to Isleworth after their marriage in 1831?
They are obviously back in Northamptonshire in 1851. Daughter Charlotte was born in 1833 in Northamptonshire.

Do you have their marriage entry?

I couldn't read the 9 year old daughter's name but it is transcribed as Susan. I wonder if this is a hint that the child is named after her grandmother Susanna?  ;) A submitted record on the IGI gives her name as Susanna and her chr as 13 Mar 1842 Benefield.

It is looking possible that the above family is correct.

I will try to find them on other censuses.

I am having problems locating the family in 1841 and 1861 censuses.

All I can find is Susan Thorpe in 1861 - she is 22 a visitor to Ann Jupp a 66 year old Widow b Wiltshire - living in Isleworth.

In 1861 Edward is an Oilman's Porter(?) married to Anne and living in Westminster.

Can't find the others. Maybe someone else can come to the rescue.
