S Hancock & Sons
« on: Thursday 24 February 11 09:37 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace the Hancock family of the pottery company S Hancock & Sons or Sampson Hancock & Sons. (Stoke-on-Trent, I believe)

Does anyone have any information on Sampson Hancock's family? I have seen the name spelt Sampson and Samson. I have found two different possible birth dates so they may very well be different people.

One of the designers/painters at the company was Molly Hancock who apparently was the daughter of Jabez Hancock but I have also been told that she was the daughter of a Florence Hancock ???.

Does anyone know who Sampson Hancock's  parents, siblings, wife or children were? Any info on the S Hancock & Sons family will be of great help.

Please someone help me get past this brickwall I keep hitting.... my head hurts :)

Hi Bubo,

There is a little information here http://www.thepotteries.org/allpotters/501.htm
which suggests that the pottery operated from Tunstall before moving to Stoke
and also mentions that the family were prominent Wesleyans. Thses two snippets
may have some bearing on the direction of your search.

Sorry if you were already aware of this.

Hi vv

Thank you so much for your reply and  taking the trouble to supply the link.  I had visited the site before and obtained most of my info from there.

Your reply is greatly appreciated.

Sampson had a brother Jabez, and a son Jabez. Do we know which
of the two was the reputed father of Molly, or what time-scale she was
involved in the business?

vv, I have assumed that Molly was the daughter of Jabez, the son that took over the business along with brothers Harry and Arthur.
I have learnt from the website of Stoke-on-Trent Museums that Molly Hancock's designs were first produced in 1926. It was on the same website that I read  she was the daughter of Jabez Hancock.

I was given a bit of the family tree from one of our family members which stated the following regarding Molly and Jabez:

Children: Percy Gordon Hancock b.1885 d. 1970 ; Florence Hancock; Jabez James; Winifred
Parents:  Edmund Hancock and Martha Goodhall

*Below the name of Florence - the name Molly Doreen, is added in.
*Percy Gordon Hancock is my husbands Grandfather and I know for a fact he lived at 18 Woodland Avenue Crewe.
Percy married Doris Wilmer and their children were Doreen, Frederick James, William, Elfreda and Everard
This is basically all I had to start off with-  so your added info means alot to me. Thanks once again!

Hi Bubo,

I didn't bother transcribing the two 1881 entries because you can get them free at family search I
believe, and didn't go for 1901 since Sampson was then past his sell-by date.

If you need any work done on his siblings or sprogs, give us a shout.
