Cassels and Possible link to Kennedys
« on: Monday 28 February 11 04:26 GMT (UK) »
I came across a family tree in which the Cassels name was linked to the Kennedy name.

Apparently the Kennedy's were given the title Earl of Cassillis (pronounced Cassels, I am told) at some point around 1440 to 1463.

My ancestor John Cassels, born around 1700 has been linked in the family tree through one Gilbert Kennedy, but the  person submitting the tree cannot substantiate that link.

Any help or additional information on that link would be appreciated.

What made you post on the Fife thread? The Kennedys of Cassillis are an Ayrshire family.

I've just discovered some Kennedy ancestors in Kelso, Roxburghshire.

All of the Cassels in my family tree are from Fife, So I was hoping to connect with someone else that has a connection with John Cassels that might know if his father was Gilbert Kennedy or not.

I show a Thomas Cassels as the son of John Cassels II although I have his birth date as 6 Sept 1761 and the place as Balbiring Coalhill, Fife, Scotland.

I can send you a gedcom file of this or you can see it on Ancestry.com under the Cassell Family Tree.

Hi tcassell,
I have no John Cassells until mid-19th century and another in the 20th.
It is Balbirnie Coalhill or Coal-Hill near Markinch .... ancestry's usual dreadful OCR work !
I know the area well, with many ancestors in that area.
I note that Thomas Cassels' birth is an LDS submission and not a genuine OPR on the Mormon site.
With my world wide membership of ancestry, I will have a wee look at your tree, and report back if I spot a link. No need for gedcoms at this stage.
Slainte,

Hi, I am interested in this connection as my name is Cassells. My earliest known Cassells ancestor was born around 1760 with his descendants living in Annaloist, Co. Armagh. I haven't found a connection to Scottish ancestors apart from one DNA match on Ancestry whose Cassells family were all from Scotland.

Can you give us some actual information - names, dates, places?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
