Thanks everyone, this is finally coming together for me.  Is there a way to locate the actual farm location?  I have often heard my mother speak of "the farm", not knowing where it was located.

I saw in the census record mention of this location: Bk Convent Lane, Layton With Warbreck.

Does anyone know if this is that an address that can be traced to a location well enough?

The Convent of the Holy Child Jesus was on St. Walburga's Rd in Layton, according to the 1930-3 map on www.old-maps.co.uk. It had been there for some time, as it is on the 1895 map. No sign in the 1840s though. It's now St. Mary's Catholic College.

I would have guessed Back Convent Lane as being the road vaguely parallel with St. Walburga's Rd to the north east of the convent, but there are no appropriate buildings shown there on the maps I can see.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Is there a chance that "Bk" is an abbreviation for "Black", and there is or was a road named "convent" in Layton With Warbreck?  :-\

"Black" would be abbreviated with an L in there. The usual meaning of Back (in Lancashire at least) is a road parallel to the road named in the rest of the name. Thus, Back Spring Gardens in Bolton gave access to the rear of the properties in Spring Gardens. The latter has been demolished, but the former still exists.

My mum and dad's first home was a flat in Back Market St, Chorley. The access was down an alleyway from another street, but the flat was above a shop with its frontage onto Market St, the main street in Chorley.

Do have a look at the area www.old-maps.co.uk. It might be easier to look up "Little Layton" (NW of the convent) or "Normoss" (to its east) if you are unfamiliar with the area. Once you have found the right area on the modern map, you can pick the peiod from the list on the right.

That makes sense.  Will have a look.

Do yo know of anyway, to locate the Sanderson farm, just by the name?  Were there any maps that shows farms by ownership?  (the only problem is maybe the family did not own the farm).  anyway I saw a notation of "Farmer Of 36 Acres Marton", then on the 1891 census: "1891 Ryscar, Bispham Road Carleton."

So I'll see if I can find that road on the old maps website. Any other ideas is much appreciated.

thanks

Rob

Looks like the family moved around a bit - indicative of renting.

Marton is to the north of junction 4 of the M55.

Ryscar Farm is marked on the current map, north west from the centre of Carleton. It's visible on Google Earth too, though Streetview has it only in the distance. You may have to search for "Poulton-le-Fylde" and head northwest to see Carleton.

Farms often seem to take the name of an inhabitant who stayed there a long time, or who made some impact in the community. My lot always seemed to take over from the people who had the place named after then. Then again, I do have a link to Peter Lee, who had a whole town named after him, so that evens things out.

Just been looking at the censuses.
In 1851 Peter is with his grandparents Peter & Bridget at Moss-side, Marton. This is the area to the north east of Blackpool Airport.

In 1861, Peter is married to Mary and farming 18 acres somewhere in Layton with Warbreck. The farm may be in the Carleton area, but it is not clear.

In 1871 Peter is in a house between Riscah Farm (Ryscar) and Woodhouse Farm, in Carleton. Both are marked on the current map.

In 1881 he is at Greenheys House, which was on what is now Blackpool Road north east from Woodhouse Farm. The building appears to have been demolished.

In 1891 the family are still at Greenheys.

By 1901 Peter had died. His widow Mary is running Greenheys.

A2A shows a couple of interesting documents at the LRO.

[no title]  DDX 560/71  4 Aug. 1887

Contents:
Deed of Partition: (i) Peter Sanderson of Carleton, farmer, and Peggy Braithwaite of Marton, widow, (ii) Richard Sanderson of Birkdale, farmer, Agnes Ann Scholfield of Carleton, married woman, Bridget Alice Sanderson and Mary Elizabeth Sanderson of Carleton, spinsters, and (iii) William Abbott of Preston, solicitor -- for division (as per schedule) of property late of Peter Sanderson of Marton (natural son of daughter Ann Jolly) between parties (i) and (ii).

[no title]  DDX 560/72  Dated 12 Mar. 1885

Contents:
Will of Peter Sanderson of Carleton, farmer -- all to wife Mary. Executors: Sons Robert, William and John.
Probate 18 May 1891
Personalty £456.

There are also references to Sandersons in the district in the 18th century. Maybe they DID own land after all.

The coding DDX560 refers to the papers of Sanderson of Marton

Lancashire Record Office apparently holds 74 files for Sanderson of Marton.

It looks like a visit to Lancashire Record Office would be worthwhile!

Hi Rwenman. Came across this site whilst googling.
In case you are interested my Grandfather who died in 1997 aged 92 was Richard Sanderson who was the owner and farmer of Ryscar Farm all his life. One of his daughters Mary was my mother (also sadly passed).
I spent many happy times at the farm during my youth and the last time I visited was around 1998 just before the farm was sold to a local doctor and his wife.
I have many photographs of the farm and obviously can pinpoint it exactly for you.
If you require any information I can be contacted at *
