Lyons/Lions - Compton PR's

I wonder whether someone would be good enough to help me pull  my Lyon(s)/Lion family all together.  I have gone as far as I can with the IGI for Compton, what I need now is someone with access to the PR's as there a few blank spaces which I hope I can fill... (with help )  The name is spelt either Lyon(s) or Lion.

Starting with a look at Richard Lyon's marriage , the entry states - 8 Aug 1602 to Joane/Jane Lewes or Corvar. Can we find out which young lady he married ?  There are 2 children baptised in Compton to Richard and Joane  Richard 24 Aug 1602 and Tobye 13 Nov 1603. Then no more children until John Lyon 29 Dec 1616.  Did Joane/Jane die and Richard re-marry?  Are there any more children inbetween these dates if Joane hasn't died?

I have quite a few unanswered questions with this family in Compton, so any information would a great plus.

Richard LYONS servant to Tobye Bradford & Joane LEWES alias CORVAR, d/o Elizabeth, widow

Will have a look for Joan's birth/death.

I can't see a death for Joan or another marriage for Richard.  Perhaps they moved away for a while?  The only burials that seem to apply to the immediate family are :

1602   7 Sep   Richard s/o Richard LYON

1644  17 Aug  Richard LION

*1655  Toby LYON (this is in the index but I cannot find it anywhere else, it is said to be an inserted entry but I have gone round and round in circles without finding it!

Some marriages:

1641  24 Jul  Tobias LION & Margreat CURTTIS

1645  18 Aug  John LION & Elizabeth ALLEN

Burial of Elizabeth w/o John LION 31 Jan 1649/50 then

1651 Nov 1 John LION & Elizabeth WESTOLL


There are quite a lot of LEWES alias CORVAR (CARVER) entries - this may be the burial of Joan's father:

1580  May 28  Richard LEWES alias CORVAR

and her mother:

1605  Dec 18  Elizabeth LEWES alias CORVAR wid


This may be Joan's baptism:

1577  Dec 13  Joane d/o Richard LEWES alias CORVAR [CARVER]

there is also

1566  Apr 1  Joane d/o John CORVAR [CARVER]

but this would make her a bit old to have John.  There is no marriage of a Richard Lewes etc with an Elizabeth to confirm the parentage.  But there are burials for 2 Johns, one of whom had a wife Elizabeth who predeceased him.  The other John seems to have married an Alice.  So on balance I think her father must have been Richard.

* found it - Jan 31 so year is 1655/6.  The inserted burials were under marriages, very easy to miss    Joan wasn't there, either.

Thanks SG that's brilliant. Tobias Lion and Margaret Curttis are my 400 (ish) year old grand-parents. -infact now we have Richard and Joane so back one more step - amazing, thank you. Just one question, why would the family be 'alias' Corvar (Carver) ? and then Lewis ? Was this usual practice - to change names?

I don't know (sometimes it's to do with stepfathers), but the very first entry in the Compton baptisms is .....

1553   Jan 20  Richard s/o John CORVAR [CARVER]

Then the next child of John CORVAR is John 1560, followed by Robert 1564, then Henry two months later!  Next up is the 1566 Joane I mentioned, so she is probably Joan Lion's aunt. 

In 1562 there is Purnell d/o John LEWES, so I don't know if this is the same chap, or what to think really.  He also has Francis in 1568 and Christian in 1570 - all daughters.  I don't know if that's significant.  It is so unhelpful not having the mother's name.

No marriage in Compton for Richard, unfortunately, but you do have Joan's mother's name as Elizabeth, which is a bit of luck.

Let me know if you need the names & dates for Toby's children.  Margaret's burial was Feb 1 1696/7 - "Margaret LION, an old widow"

Cheers SG, I think we have a bit of a mystery here.. uhmm .. There has to be some reason why the family are now Lewes (alias) Co(a)rver.. I shall have to have a look into that a little later.

I would love the children of Tobias and Margret when you have the time to look that would be great.

I just had a thought .. I wonder whether Richard is the illegitimate son of the oldest daughter  (1562) Purnell Lewes? or even one of the other daughters -  whose father is Richard Corvar 1553? bit of a long shot.. but the dates would fit. Richard jnr married in 1602 - say born 20 yrs previous - 1582. Purnell Lewes would have been 20 (ish)... that would be a nice tidy ending...
