Lookup please - Upper Arley Parish Records COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 02 March 11 12:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for any details of any Welsby's in the Upper Arley Parish Records - and possible variants - Wellsbury, Welsbury, Willsbury etc

I have details of the Christening of John Welsby 27/02/1780, Father John, Mother Sarah and know that they married in nearby Kinlet & their other 6 children were Christened in Kinlet.  From John & Sarah's marriage record on FREEREG I've learnt that John was from "Over Arley" hence my interest in the Arley records.

I would be very grateful if anyone with access to the records could do a lookup for me.

Thanks,  Karen

Hi Karen
Upper Arley and Over Arley are the same place. It was in Worcestershire, but is now in Staffordshire http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/UpperArley/index.html

If you go to this website you can search for Welsbys
https://www.familysearch.org/

alternatively you can access the transcription for Upper Arley  by going to
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm

Pick “England” then “Worcestershire” then Upper Arley. You can then either key in Welsby and then each of its variants, or leave the search blank and keep clicking through till you get to “W”. It’s longwinded, but it does mean you don’t miss any variants. I have already looked and between 1564-1812 only your John came up in baptisms and there weren't any marriages.

Incidentally Kinlet, Shropshire where John’s parents married, is less than 3 miles away.

HTH

Thanks very much Nemo for the tips.  I will try them all later once the kids are tucked up in bed!!!  I knew a little about the location of Kinlet & Upper Arley.  I originate from Wolverhampton so not too far away.   I've been using Familysearch in both it's old & new format and recently someone pointed me in the direction of their pilot site which is great but I'll certainly try your 3rd tip later.

Thanks again. Will post any updates.

Hi Karen

I have already put this on my wish list for Worcester History Centre as I think they hold the registers for Upper Arley.

I will be going up to the County of my birth on holiday 18th April so keep your fingers crossed that I can find something in the registers

All the very best

Hi Karen

I did a good search of the registers for Upper Arley either side of 1780 but was unable to find any Welsby's there sorry

All the very best

Phil

ps I wonder if they lived ther but were not born there & put Upper Arley down on the census when asked "wwhere do you come from"

Hi Phil

Thanks eversomuch for doing that. Really kind of you, a shame it didn't turn up anything after all your efforts.

The reference to "Over Arley" came from a marriage record so your suspicion that John just lived there could be perfectly correct.

I hope you  had some success with your own search.

Best wishes

Karen

Hi Karen

Dont give up on this as it would be worth searching every contiguous parish (joining) to Upper Arley as sometimes people were bornin (say) a churchless hamlet & were baptised in the nearest place that had a church or if its a first born the wife somethimes went home to her Mum to have the child as she had done it all before & knew the snags that may crop up
