Mary E Austin
« on: Wednesday 02 March 11 22:08 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to track Mary E (Elizabeth) Austin, b 1859, Leicester.

1861 and 1871 - Living in Leicester with her parents, Charles and Elizabeth, and siblings. (This is "my" Mary)
1911 - living in Leicester with her mother, occupation "engaged in household duties".
Died 1914, Leicester.

Now in 1881, there is a Mary E Austin from Leicester working as governess in Cheshire. In 1891, she's working as a governess in East Langton, Leicester, and in 1901 she's with members of the same family in Westminster, the father of the family having become an MP.

Unfortunately FreeBMD gives 2 births:
q1 1859 AUSTIN  Mary Elizabeth     Leicester  7a 182
and
q3 1859 Austin  Mary Elizabeth     Leicester  7a 150

arrgh! And I can't find a death (other than "my" one in 1914) so don't know if the 1881-1901 Mary is the same on as the 1861- 71 Mary. I think it probably is - but how can I tell, if there were 2  born in the same town, same year??

Any suggestions on a way forwards?
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)

You could buy both birth certificates :)  However looking at the births for these two and then at the 1861 and 1871 censuses I think it is highly likely that the other Mary Elizabeth Austin was the daughter of Samuel and Esther Austin. In 1861 she is with her parents and is born Leicester, also born Leiceste in 1871 but the three youngest children of Sam and Esther are all born Melton Mowbray. I mention this because there is a marriage for a Mary Elizabeth Austin to a Charles Edward Edlin March 1/4 1879 vol 7a page 324 reg dist Melton Mowbray. This could be the 'other ' Mary Elizabeth and would thus eliminate her.  There was a Mary Austin born in 1859 in Melton Mowbray but she was a Mary Ann and she is with her parents Samuel and Fanny in 1871 saying born Sowerby which is in the registration district of Melton Mowbray.
I think the one you have followed through the censuses is yours.

ps. Mary Elizabeth Edlin nee Austin is with her husband Charles in 1881 and down as born Saint Margaret's Liecester. She is a tailoress and their first child John Edward was born in Northamptonshire 1880 and their second Samuel Earnest in St Margaret's 1881 so they moved away for a short while.
