Marriage Help Please
« on: Thursday 03 March 11 19:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Please can someone have a second look me, for the marriage of a John Davis and Alice Hayes, which I seem unable to locate.

Alice Hayes was born 1863 (September quarter) in the registration district of Horsham, Sussex.
John Davis was born 1860 in Birmingham, Warwickshire.

In 1881 they are living with their two sons in a lodging house in Brentford,Middlesex;

3, Lodging House, Old Spring Gardens, Ealing With Old Brentford, Middlesex

John Davis         aged 21  born 1860  Birmingham, Warwickshire
Alice Davis         aged 19  born 1862  Brighton, Sussex
Frederick Davis  aged 2    born 1879  Brighton, Sussex
John Davis         aged 0    born 1881  Brentford, Middlesex

With their first son being born in Brighton, Sussex, I would of thought it was possibly more likely that they married in Sussex.  However, I have not been able to locate a marriage for them in any location or any year.  I have also though not been able to find a registration for the birth of Frederick?

Their second son John, is my great grandfather and I have his birth certificate for February 1881.

If anyone is able to shed any light on this it would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Tracey

Did John have the sort of job that necessitated travel?  If so, there is a FreeBMD index enrty for Wrexham (Sept 1879) which has Alice Hayes and John DAVIES on the same page which might suit?  Roy G

Thanks for this Roy, it could well be them  :)

John Davis' occupation was stated as a musician. They were Romany so would have travelled around a lot which makes tracking them down much harder.

Sadly received an e-mail from the GRO today confirming that the Alice Hayes and John Davies registered on the same page for Wrexham in September 1879 were not married to each other  :(

Back to the drawing board again, to look for more clues, but there seems no other likely marriage possibilities and it may be that my Alice Hayes and John Davis were never actually married.  Although on later census I have found an Alice Davis, who I think could possibly be one of the same, living with the Cooper family in Sussex but is listed as daughter?
