Anstis Street Plymouth 1901
« on: Sunday 06 March 11 14:39 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I have a death certificate for George Wootten at 34 Anstis Street, Plymouth, 1894. The informant was his son W., who I think was Walter. I caannot find Walter in the 1901 census, and Wootten can be spelled many ways. I would like to look in the 1901 census for 34 Anstis Street. Does anone know if there is a street index for the 1901 census for Plymouth, please?

Thanks

Thanks, Evie - and I love Barnaby!

I am guessing they moved from Anstis Street between 1894 and 1901, then.

Unfortunatley, when I type those numbers into Ancestry nothing happens! I thought I could get at census records just using the GRO numbers, but not so, even though there is a place to type them. So I don't know what you found in RG13 729. Walter and his father George were tailors. So was Walter's brother George! If you have George in 1901 it must be George Junior becuae George Senior died in 1894. Please can you tell me where they were in this entry? And was Wootten spelled like that? If it was I ought to be able to find Walter in 1901.

Thanks

Hi :)

It was Walter I spotted in 1901. I tried those numbers too and for some reason no results found. However if you put in search Walter Wootton 1866 residence Kent and nothing else he will appear.
He is with wife Ellen A and two children.

Do you want me to look for George Jnr?

Thanks, Evie - I have George Junior in Plymouth 1901.

I think that must be my Walter, so thanks very much for finding him. I see his name is spelled differently this time - that has been a problem for me and the Woottens a lot! It is odd that he didn't know where he was born, when he was living in Plymouth with his parents in 1891, and was an informant on his father's death there in 1894. I think him being a tailor is the clue, though. His father and brothers were tailors. Also, his father was in the marines. There is a clear connection between Plymouth and Chatham and the marines, so, although Walter wasn't a marine in 1901, he might have been at some time.

I have also found a marriage for him in Maidstone in 1897, which is a possibility. So I now have a few more things to look for.

Once again, many thanks - sometimes all you need is a fresh eye, isn't it? Thanks for that.

Hi Harlemswife

You are very welcome.

Yes I was surprised he didn't know where he was born, unless his wife answered the enumerator's questions and wasn't quite sure.
