Leicester Regiment and Records?
« on: Wednesday 09 March 11 23:34 GMT (UK) »
Good Evening

I am trying to find any information on a WW1 soldier who was listed as being an Army Pensioner on his death certificate. He was only 26 when he died in 1924 so I presume he was pensioned out of the war. He died of Phthisis which I understand to be some sort of TB? or could it have something to do with a gas attack which has also been suggested?

I have checked Ancestry for a pension record or service papers but with no luck.

I wonder if there could be some sort of pension payment record somewhere eg TNA or similar? I tried to use their search engine but it always seems to need too precise info and I didn't find anything. He was from Whetstone in Leicestershire but I have no regiment info but are there any Pals groups etc from there?

Thanks for any help as always

Hi Ian

Have you found his WW1 medal index card - either on Ancestry or on the National Archives website? If so you need to post the details.

The Pensions Department sent unwanted records to the forerunner of the NA c1943 to replace service records lost during 1940 bombing. These are on Ancestry as pension files. If he is not there the only other records are in PIN26 in Kew. Unfortunately they have only kept a 2% 'representative sample'.

If he was disharged after 1920 the MOD will still have his service record. So I think you need to research what he was doing 1921 to 1924. If you find him as a soldier you will know you have to apply to the MOD.

Thanks Ken

Unfortunately I haven't found him on the medal roll etc, there are about 15 possibilities without a way to check it's him. It's also unlikely that he was still in the Army after 1918 as he married in 1919.

Cheers

You should check at the local record office for any newspapers available around the time of his death. His family are very likely to have put a notice in the newspapers that may include his past regiment to inform his old buddies.

You can also ask them if a Roll of Honour was produced for his area. This allowed men (or NoK) to pay for his name to be added to a book that was then published. Also look at the Electoral Roll for 1918-19. Details of soldiers often include regiment and even number.

I've got to go through Leicester next week so I'll make enquiries before I go.

Thanks
