« on: Friday 11 March 11 16:23 GMT (UK) »
!861 & 1871 Census indexes for Sussex record Maclaine Kerr Dalton Whiting / Whitting residing in Steyning census area.  He was born posthumously in 1859.  Am keen to discover with whom/where living at these dates & whether he was farmed out to relatives.  Any available help much appreciated.

You perhaps already know that his mother remarried in 1862 to Edward Henry Girling.

Many thanks for all that.  We have full bios of his mother & of MKDW in later years - his early years are a bit of a mystery when he became heir to his father's considerable fortune made in Australia after his father died on his extended honeymoon in Brighton after marrying a wife half his age.
yrs.,
Whiting

Well you have him there then with his mother in 1861 and then at school in 1871.

In 1881 RG11; Piece: 3127; Folio: 121; Page: 24 he looks to be a Lieutenant in the Leicester Militia
