Mystery boy
« on: Saturday 12 March 11 21:22 GMT (UK) »
My great great grandfather (George Aitkin)'s family was from Lilliesleaf and living in his household was a boy named William Fox who was listed in the Scottish census of 1841 and 1851 as my g-g-grandfather's grandson. There is nothing in the family history to indicate how he fits in. There was a 20 year old daughter (Mary) living in the household in 1841 (when the surname was spelled Aitken) but no adult with the Fox surname. I am relatively new to searching for details online, especially in overseas databases. William Fox was apparently born on April 26, 1840 in Roxburghshire-Wilton. We can't seem to find anything on him beyond 1851. Is anybody out there a descendant of him or have any hints?
This is one intriguing family mystery that will be fun to solve some day.

William Fox married Mary Patterson on 03/02/1865 in Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.

Williams parents were James Fox (Shepherd) & Mary Aitken (housekeeper).

Mary's parents were Robert  Patterson (Hedger) & Barbara Patterson (nee Hogg)

Witnesses were George Aitken & ? Patterson

Not necessarily.  In Scotland, the mother's name is usually given with her maiden surname, even if the couple were married.  There is also a history of 'irregular' marriages

Have a look here and scroll down to Irregular Marriages

SP has no marriage for Mary Aitken & James Fox.

But I am not very familiar with regular & irregular marriages.
