Thank you to all of you! This is fabulous!

Barbara - do you know if I can get copies of the newspaper extracts or will or just the wording?
Does the will mention his wife, Hannah, or could she have already died?

Next step - finding where they are buried!

The National Probate Index is on Ancestry and there is an entry for Samuel Barlow in 1894

The entry mentions Hannah Barlow widow

You can obtain a copy of the will for £5 see below for further information

I got this from the British Library/Gale newspaper archive which I can access online as a Lancashire library member.  Ask at your own library if they can give you access, or send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you more of the extract.
Widow Hannah was the executor and main beneficiary of the will, so she did outlive Samuel.

I was following up some of the newspaper reports for you - mostly about his tulip-breeding successes, but then I came across this link describing him as a very significant art collector :
http://www.jstor.org/pss/874871

I'm an art-lover, practically weeping here at the thought of him buying a Pissarro for 30 guineas!
Here is one of them, now in the Manchester Art Gallery:

Crumbs! I might just pay a visit to go and see that.

Must have been a very wealthy man!

Hi,
I've just come across this thread from 13 years ago. It has some very interesting information that I didn't know about.
Samuel Barlow was my great great great uncle on my mother's side of the family.
Interestingly, his nephew, James William Bentley, was also a mayor of Middleton.
