Death indexes/certificates in Ireland
« on: Sunday 13 March 11 14:08 GMT (UK) »
Hello;  Does Ireland have like in England, death indexes from which I could get a death certificate.

I have Ann Wright, born around 1824 in Norfolk who died, as per info gleaned elsewhere, "suddenly on 19th October 1862 at the Earl of Clonmell's Bishops Court Estate & was buried at Kill Church Co Kildare on 24th Oct 1862"

regards John

The Irish Civil BMD Index is available to search on the familysearch website, but full civil registration only started in 1864.. so just to late to include details of the death you mentioned.

see : Introduction to Irish Records

Thanks for the quick response Shane, too early by 2 years; wonder if the Kill church burial records have details of this. Also - why suddenly? wonder if there was was an incident that may have been reported locally

Parish Death/Burial records tend to be very basic - often just just name and age. Do you know the family religion ?

RC records for the parish of Kill go back to 1813, but dont include death/burials. Church of Ireland records for the parish go back to the same timeframe - 1814 for baptism, 1820 for marriages and 1814 for deaths.

It might be worth trying newspapers to see if anything is mentioned, especially as going by the address, the family sound quite prominent. I dont know what papers were published in the area in the 1860 (and survive), but it might be worth trying Freeman's Journal of Dublin, as this covers 'society' BMD notices from all over Ireland. I believe this is available online on a British Library or Gale collection ?

"Suddenly" is very commonly found in Irish obituaries, even to the present day, so it might might be anything suspicious or sinister.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I would also interpret 'suddenly' as unexpected - i.e. a death with no pre-diagnosed illness
