A bit of history on photography...
« on: Sunday 13 March 11 16:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello there!

I am trying to get a bit of info on when the first photos were taken.  I have a picture of a family whose father died in 1834...when were the first photos taken at a professional studio.  In the picture, it stated that the photographer was Wheeler in Goshen, New York.

Thanks for all of your help!  YOU are the BEST!

1839 by Louis Daguerre. They were called Daguerreotypes believe it or not & the image was imprinted directly onto the medium which in this case was copper.1852 saw the 1st. ambrotype, same thing but on glass.1858 saw the 1st. CdeV,same principle but imprinted onto a negative plate so copies could be taken also they were not mirror images as the other 2 were.
So someone who died in 1834 couldn't have his photo taken unless he was dug up.

About half way down are some photos by Wheeler of Goshen N.Y.   Taken about 1900. I do not know how long he was in business or if there was more than one generation.

Oh Jim Jim Jim

I am doubling up in laughter over here.  I suppose this distant cousin labeled this one incorrectly. Will pass the info on to him.

YOU are right on that one...

WE had SO MUCH snow this winter.  And we NEVER get snow...it was incredible to see.  I think it is my new daughter in law who came for Christmas last year and told us she was going to miss her snow from her home in Wyoming and Utah.  This was going to be her FIRST Christmas away from home and away from all of the gorgeous snow up North.   The day she said that, it snowed six inches IN Dallas. Unheard of.  Since then...this winter was cold cold cold....burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Hmmmmm....finger to chin contemplating that one!

Hi Carole :)

Just for interest's sake, you might like to have a look at my website "What Photo is That" which has a timeline for photo processes, as well as a description of most of them:

P.S.  My sister lives in Austin and even there it was freezing this winter!

Thanks Prue...

Will look at that website.  Another question.  A cousin sent me some film (it was huge) to develop into pictures.  Where do we take such negatives to develop them...

PS  Austin is four hours south of me.  INCREDIBLE the snow we had this winter.

Hi Carole :)

When you say "huge"...how big is it?  There might be a photographic pro-lab somewhere near you that will process it, or even a community college that has photographic resources that could do it.

Cheers
