1841 Census
« on: Monday 14 March 11 00:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello
This is a very long shot for one of my brick walls!
I have found a SARAH BARTAULL born about 1766 on the 1841 Census, living 'Middlesex'.
Is there any kind person who could see whereabouts in Middlesex she is, and who she is living with?
I'm hoping she is still married and her husband Lewis is away somewhere else (can't find him at all!)

Many thanks ain advance

In the above census, none of the people are born in Middx and Sarah's occupation is "Ind". Does this fit in with what you know goldie?

I'm wondering if there is any relationship between John and Sophia Spencer and Sarah. Might she be Sophia's mother?

Do you expect Lewis to still be alive in 1841?

Hm
Thanks for this Janine and Ruskie.
Unfortunately I can't see any connection between Sophia and Sarah.
Does "ind' mean Independent means? Possibly.

I am actually after a Lewis and Sarah Bertolle - but this is such an odd name, the record of Sarah Bartaull was the only possibility on A*.

Lewis Francis Augustus Bertolle dies March 1843 in Wandsworth, so I had expected them to be in the 1841 Census somewhere, or at least Lewis! I haven't seen his death entry, but am guessing it would give little more information.

As far as I have found out Lewis and Sarah had 3 children ; Lewis b1795 who by 1841 is living in Scotland with his wife Elizabeth Clark and son; James b 1798 who seems to have a raft of children between 1838 and 1852 all around London ( he dies 1873 in Islington), and Elizabeth b 1803 (haven't traced her). I do have Lewis jnr's death record in Dunbarton, Scotland in 1863, but it is registered by 'an acquaintance' who didn't seem to know Lewis' parents names. SO I don't even know Sarah's maiden name.
I have checked for Lewis and Sarah in Scotland in 1841 too but not found them there.

Both Lewis snr and Lewis jnr were Dyers - Lewis jnr a 'master dyer'. I have written to the Worshipful Company of Dyers at Dyers Hall London, but not received any reply.

Ah well, maybe one day I'll find another piece in the brick wall!!
Thanks for the interest

I found it on one site and then found it in the London collection on Ancestry where Lewis' surname had been left off. I have submitted a correction, so hopefully it will be amended.

Thanks Sue - I was wonderening where you found it. - What was the other site you mentioned?

I also can't find the marriage of Lewis' son, another Lewis, born 1795 at Spitalfields. I do know he married an Elizabeth Clark (from one of their daughter's death certificates). The first child from the marriage I've found born, Elizabeth, 1816 Spitalfields, Christ church, Stepney.
I wonder if you can find them? Not on Ancestry as far as I can see (even missing off Bertolle!)

Many thanks
