Dear Prosehill

I've had a root around the 1851 and then back to the 1841 census and can't seem to identify any of your people.  ???

Do you know what John's occupation was or do you have any other information that might help us specifically identify the family?

I'm sure others will have more luck than I, but if you could give all the information you have, it might make it easier.

Now I am embarrassed.  John's wife, Maria, shows a death date of 1832 in Rotherfield, Sussex, England so she would not have been alive in 1851.  So the family you show may be the John Holmwood I was looking for.  From the marriage with Maria, the only child that I was aware of was James (b. 5 Sep 1813 in Rotherfield, Sussex & d. 11 Dec 1889 in Orchard Park, Erie County, New York, USA)  Thanks to "Rosie99", I know he was married to Louise Callow/Callour on 6 Feb 1837 in Buxted, Sussex, England so has a family of his own in 1851.  Children are: James (b. 1841 in Buxted, Sussex); Henry (b. 25 Jan 1844 in Buxted, Sussex & d. 13 Aug 1889 probably in New York, USA); William (b. May 1846 in England); Samuel (b. Dec 1848 in Sussex, East Sussex); Franklin F. (b. 23 Aug 1859 in Hamburg, Erie county, New York, USA & d. 11 Dec 1889 in Buffalo, Erie county, New York, USA)

I really thought the 1851 census would help, but I am beginning to have my doubts.  Looking in the 1900 U.S. Census for William H. Holmwood (b. May 1846 in England), it says he immigrated to the U.S. in 1850 so the 1851 census would be no help.  James & Louise Holmwood might be found in the 1841 census since they were married in 1837 in Buxted, Sussex, England.  I found their first child would have been a daughter, Sarah, (b. 30 Jun 1839 in Sussex, England).  I am not sure if the son, James, (b. 1841 in Buxted, Sussex, England) would be listed or not.  One more thing - I am assuming the Holmwoods were Quakers since most seem to be buried in a Quaker Cemetery in Orchard Park, Erie County, New York.  Could their have been a migration of Quakers to the States in 1850?

Thanks to everyone for your help.  I will see what I can do to understand this new information.  It is obvious there are some very experienced census researchers out there.
