WWI: Prisoners of War
« on: Tuesday 15 March 11 19:58 GMT (UK) »
I believe that my grandfather John William Spink Ellis, born 1881, was a Prisoner of War in WWI.
Is there an internet-based record of POWs for WWI ?
I have not managed to locate his Military Service/Medals Awards on the Ancestry website.
Two of his brothers were in the Royal Engineers so possibly John William was also in the RE.
The brothers all came from Wetherby, Yorkshire and all had a middle forename of Spink.
His next of kin was his wife Elizabeth Ellis (nee Todd).

I don't know of any online info, but I've just been reading an article about POWs in Family History Monthly which says that some material can be found in records of POWs in series FO383 and some interviews and reports of repatriated soldiers to the Committee on the Treatment of British Prisoners of War are in series WO161 which is available through Documents Online on The National Archives website.

Hi

There is a National Archives guide to researching prisoners of war at

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/prisoners-war-1760-1919.htm

I find the NA difficult to navigate but this may give you a start. I note that it says that there is no comprehensive list so it's very much a matter of chance whether you can find your John William Spink Ellis

Good luck
