John Coleman b. 1769 in Norfolk
« on: Wednesday 16 March 11 11:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I'm researching the Coleman side of my family all born in Kidderminster, Worcestershire.

I have found my Great, Great grandfather George Coleman b.1850 on the 1861, 71, 81 census.
I have traced him parents back aswell. His parents were George Coleman b. 1809 and Sarah barber b. 1814.

The 1841 and 1851 census shows George Snr's father John Coleman b. 1769 in Windon??? Norfolk - living with them.

Does anyone out there have any knowledge of John's wife or parents???

Hope someone can help

thanks

Sharon

Hello Sharon,

Welcome to Rootschat.

I've had a look at the 1841 and 51 censuses for George and John Coleman.
If I'm right, in 1841, father and son were living in Kidderminster - both silk weavers.
On this census, John indicates he was born in Worcestershire.

Yes, on the 1851, John says he was born Norfolk, and it does look like Windon - but I've never heard of such a place.  The nearest I could get was Wiveton, but it doesn't really look like that does it?

The Family Search site has a possible baptism for George (1809), which shows his father as John Coleman and mother Ann - http://www.rootschat.com/links/0c9v/

It doesn't take us much further, I know but every little helps!

OK, take a VERY large pinch of salt!!

Could it with a stretch be Wymondham, mis-heard by whoever filled in the census or they just didn't know how to sepll it?? Bit of a leap I know  :-X

There just happens to be a John, son of John and Mary Colman, baptised August 30th, 1769 on image 37 of 161 (right hand page) in the register for Wymondham on FamilySearch.

Goodness knows how you would ever confirm it's the right person, but maybe worth making a note of just in case?

Hello again,

Davidrigg, I don't think you're that far off the mark.  I've checked a few websites, and Wymondham is indeed pronounced "Windam" by many.

There seems no reason, does there, for someone to say he was born in Norfolk if he wasn't!!

Wymondham also had a silk-weaving industry, so your find is a definite possibility.

My first thought on reading this thread was that it might be Wymondham.
Chowns in Buckinghamshire
Broad, Eplett & Pope in St Ervan/St Columb Major, Cornwall
Browning & Moore in Cambridge, St Andrew the Less
Emms, Mealing & Purvey in Cotswolds, Gloucestershire
Barnes, Dunt, Gray, Massingham in Norfolk
Higho in London
Matthews & Nash in Whichford, Warwickshire
Smoothy, Willsher in Coggeshall & Chelmsford, Essex

Thanks guys.

i did a search on google maps for Windon and came up blank (which was why i put question marks after the name)
I will look in the Wymondham records...see if i can find anything.

I'm reasonably confident that i have found John Coleman's other children (with wife Ann as per Yorkslass's suggestion)

One of the Children is Jane Walter Coleman born 1799 in Kidderminster.

Walter is an unusual choice for a female... maybe it is a family name (i'm thinking a variation of mothers maiden name?)

its a possibility.

thanks

Sharon
