Ordering a certificate.
« on: Wednesday 16 March 11 12:34 GMT (UK) »
I've decided to go ahead and order a couple of death certificates via GRO. However, after reading their FAQs, I have read that it takes up to 15 days for the order to be processed if there is no GRO index reference. But if I were to have it, then it would only take around 5 days.

Can anybody tell me what the GRO index reference is? I have an idea but I want to make sure I'm putting the right thing down on my order.

Am I right in saying that it is one of these:
a) 11b 100
b) RG13 ....

yes to a); no to b)

Use an Index search site like FreeBMD to get the FULL GRO reference you need to order.

This will be the Quarter (March, June, Sept or December) of the year and of course the actual Year.

Then the Registration District Name.

Then the Volume (eg 11b) and Page numbers ...

all under the actual name you found of course  :P

eg:-

Marriages Dec 1861

Moore  William    Mansfield  Volume 7b Page 138

Dont add any info into the boxes you have to fill in, just stick to what was displayed by FreeBMD - or you may not get a match .....

Mort is correct - and even if there is a spelling error in the name, copy it exactly as it is in the index or they will not issue the certificate.

This tells you what to expect on a death certificate:
