Alice CLOSE b.1909 - a challenge
« on: Wednesday 16 March 11 12:40 GMT (UK) »
Alice's birth looks to be 1909 from two sources. I have her marriage certificate from November 1932 which gives her age as 23, and her death in 1968 (Free BMD) gives her age as 59.

Her marriage certificate gives her father as Joseph - deceased.

On the 1911 census I find two Alice Closes, born abt. 1908 and 1910. Both have fathers of the wrong name.

The Free BMD shows a 1909 birth in Tynemouth, but that is one I found on the 1911 census, her father's name is Thomas.

Her marriage was in Uxbridge, Middlesex. Her address at that time given as Rickmansworth.

Any ideas?

The age of Alice Blower (nee Close?) on her death certificate is given by the informant and could be incorrect, and it has been known for the father's name on marriage certificates to be wrong.

The witnesses don't appear to be family, not surnames I recognize, anyway.

I don't know of any siblings.

Indeed, so I could be looking for anything.

All Alice's children are dead, BTW. There is nobody to ask.

Give us all you know, what exactly does it say on her marriage cert?
Do you know if she came from 'down south' .......ie Uxbridge,or had she come down from farther up north?

We have come across plenty of challenges before and with ALL the facts can often unravel a few clues.Making up a dad's name on a marriage cert is often done to hide illegitimacy of course.

Do you know what date she celebrated her birthday,if not the year?

OK, here's what we've got.

8 Nov 1832 Register Office Uxbridge

William George Blower 25 years Bachelor General Labourer 13C High Street Harefield Father: Henry Blower General Labourer
Alice Close 23 years Spinster (No profession*) Moorcroft, Ablons Rd, Spoor Park, Rickmansworth (address obviously wrong, but that's the best I can make from the poor print quality here) Father: Joseph Close, deceased General Labourer

Witnesses: Emily Jane Joyce, Elizabeth Matthews

* No profession - doesn't look like she was a domestic servant, which maybe could have explained her being a long way from her birthplace, if one of the northern births are correct.

I have no idea if she might be a northerner. No idea at all.
